The first time I tried this wine, I was hooked. Being unable to find in the Canadian liquor store, I end up going to the restaurant where I discovered it and paying 3 times it's worth time and time again. It's dry, full bodied, with blueberry undercurrents and leather. Not sweet at all. Memorable. My favorite all time wine.
RELEASE DATE August 2007 CASE PRODUCTION 560 AVAILABILITY Winery Only APPELLATION Sonoma Mountain VINEYARDS Benziger Estate Vineyard VINEYARD: Our Sonoma Mountain Estate Red is a Demeter-certified Biodynamic® wine produced entirely from the Benziger Family Estate. The Sonoma Mountain appellation is one of the smallest and most exclusive appellations in California. We produce three red wines from our estate: Tribute the winery's flagship wine, Sonoma Mountain Red and Joaquin's Inferno Estate Zinfandel. The four Aristotelian elements: earth, water, air and fire believed by ancient civilizations (and supported by today's science) to make up all objects in the universe are the icons and benchmarks of this wine. We believe that every place on earth has a different combination of earth (soil), water (bonds a plant to its environment), air (light) and fire (warmth). When these elements are united in ideal ratios, the fifth element (spirit) appears the ultimate expression of our connection to the land. VINTAGE: Things could not have started off worse this vintage; with a cold, wet spring and periodic rains during the summer, all matter of fungus and mold were alive and well. The amount of extra time we spent adjusting and readjusting canopies and mowing and re-mowing vineyard rows, cost us about 20% more than normal. Moving into harvest, just one rain could have knocked us out cold, but then a miracle! 30 plus days of perfect Indian summer. We ended up getting the grapes just the way we wanted them. Unknown to us, the grapes continued to gain weight late in the year. The extra weight slowed and lengthened the ripening process and this combined with great weather brought our grapes to perfect ripeness. The last grapes were picked on November 11, the latest ever for us in Sonoma. The last press load was December 1st and by this time, we were sick of harvest. This was one of those very rare harvests where we got it both waysexceptional quality and excellent yields. WINEMAKING: Obsidian Point Cabernet is a wine that showcases the diversity of terroir within individual plots of the Benziger Family Estate Vineyard. This wine is made with the most traditional hands-on methods. The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard, fermented in small tanks and serviced by hand with love and care. Native yeast and malolactic bacteria were employed throughout. The wine was aged in 40% new French oak and bottled in July of 2007. Alcohol 14.5%, Total Acidity .62, pH 3.98.
