Benziger Family Winery Merlot Sonoma County 2008
This wine has wonderfully complex aromas of sweet earth, vanilla and spice. Rich, deep flavors of black currant, plum and tobacco linger on the palate, with dark chocolate notes on the finish. Round tannins and balanced acidity combine to produce a silky, luxurious mouthfeel. Enjoy this now or cellar for 2-3 years. Food Pairing: Pairs with dishes such as broiled salmon, beef stew or roasted pork loin.
Fruity up front, but swirling stirs up a nice mineral note. Eucalyptus and cherry notes along with hints of savory charcuterie. Some suggestions of cocoa dust. On the palate it's medium bodied with flavors of dark berry fruit, black cherry, weak espresso and light hints of fresh herbs. FInishes dry and a tad tart on bigger acid. Flavors linger well, but it turns lighter toward the end. Not bad for the price. 84 pts.
Picked this wine up while visiting the winery. With so much emphasis on sustainable practices and extended family in the business, Benziger makes me WANT to like their wines. No trouble here! This merlot has notes of blackberries and mint up front, along with subtler notes of leather, cedar wood, and vanilla. Round and well integrated tannin, moderate length, and balanced acidity. A juicy yet complex wine with a bright and tart finish.
