Benton Lane Pinot Noir 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale ruby in color with a hint of purple, the 2014 Pinot Noir Estate has a nose of red currants, red cherries and underbrush, plus a waft of dusty earth. The medium-bodied palate is soft, juicy and uncomplicated with plenty of red berry flavors and nice balance.Wine Advocate 87pts Aug. 2017

Screwcap - Sweet and slightly jammy red raspberry and blackberry fruit. Tree bark and soil tones a touch of cola but also with very sappy spice notes. Soft tannins but nice, refreshing acids help maintain liveliness even though there is blocky density here. Really nice herbal, cherry, and very subtle coriander/cola tones make for a round, fairly complex midpalate. A more fruit driven style yet not overtly fruity though with air this does turn a little clumsy and seems a bit heavy handed. 84pts

A bit oaky on the nose with a distinct cinnamon sugar note and a background hint of hot mineral/iron. Extracted in the mouth if not particularly richly flavored with dark tobacco and coffee notes dominating and big tannins emerging on the finish. 80pts

Jammy raspberry nose with firmly structured wood backbone. Great pinot noir as expected from this producer and this area!

An impudent little wine. If it were a child I'd slap it and send it to bed without dinner.

Fruit-driven with bright cherry and strawberry notes. Slight cola. Nice silky mouth-feel bordering on a full-bodied wine. Hints of mushroom, gamey meats. Wouldn't call this an overly-sophisticated pinot, just an enjoyable glass of wine. So enjoyable I drank the whole bottle....

Drinkable but not exceptional, on the light / fruity side.

Bright red. Dried cherry, licorice and woodsmoke on the pungent nose, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Chewy, slightly bitter redcurrant and cherry flavors unwind slowly, picking up a licorice quality and a hint of bitter chocolate. Shows a slightly tart character on the finish, with the cherry and licorice notes echoing. Let this one stretch out in the glass.

Fresh and taut, with a sharp edge of crisp tannins to the dark berry and floral flavors, lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2016. 13,700 cases made.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Estate has a rather over-extracted bouquet that feels a little monochromatic. The palate has a slightly sour entry, the tannins rustic and there is some hardness toward the finish.

Benton Lane Pinot Noir is an excellent value, Estate Willamette Valley Pinot under 20 bucks? Yes, please. Cranberry and Red Raspberry fruit character with smokey spice and very pleasant structure.

Bright red. Candied red fruits on the nose and in the mouth. Fleshy and gently spicy, with good finishing breadth and a touch of medicinal bitterness.

The Benton-Lane 2010 Pinot Noir Estate — bottled already in August, 2011 — displays attractively sweet and juicy blueberry and cherry tinged with vanilla. Its relatively simple mid-palate sweetness however gives way to a rather hard, graceless finish. I imagine this will remain in good health for several years, and perhaps will even develop some textural tenderness and further complexity.

Very deep and complex aromas of Bing cherries, graham cracker pie crust, mushrooms and blackberries just leap from the glass. In the mouth blueberries, red raspberries and baked strawberries are ripe and viscous. This is a wine of tremendous depth and nuance.
