Benoit Ente, brother of Arnaud, began his own operation in 1998 though because he sold his first two vintages to the négoces, his first actually release was in 1999. According to Ente, September was ugly and rainy with incipient rot but with his tongue firmly in cheek, he winked and said because God is a Burgundian, he sent 10 plus days of the north wind to save the harvest! It stopped the rot dead in its tracks. It also preserved a lot of malic acid in the grapes, which caused a substantial drop in both total acidity and pH after the malos were completed.
