What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Winemakers Notes

Firm, rich and intense, with ripe, vivid blackberry and wild berry fruit and a mix of currant and raspberry. Keeps a tight focus on the long, layered finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2013. 7,000 cases made.

Editorial Reviews

Intensely aromatic if a bit raw woody, but with layers of aromas ranging from a bloody, gamey and spicy Asian Duck tone to nice green herbal scents with an anise seed edge to them. Later, with air there are floral tones and spicy black fruit notes. Sweet fruit attack followed by a bit of clumsy weight. This needs some time to better integrate though it pulls itself together pretty quickly turning out rather mouthwateringly refreshing. There is a gingerbread, fruitcake tone on the midpalate with candied plummy and maraschino cherry fruit under that nice Christmas spice. The finish is long with floral read more...

This is a very nice wine for the price. Beautiful color. Strong fruit tastes lingers on the palate. Nice finish. Good with a meal or as a stand alone glass of wine

Very interesting wine with a non-conventional blend. They use of Syrah is not typical of a meritage blend. The wine had aromas of plum and herbs. Taste was surprisingly complex with plum, current, with good balance.

Flabby and non-descript, with very little fruit and an odd oleaginous texture (doubtless achieved by "tannin management"). Tastes somewhat downmarket.

WS 90Pts - Tasting Notes - The 2005 Maximus is comprised of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 20% Syrah. The latest release of our proprietary blend opens with notes of spicy red currants, blueberry, black rasberry jam, maple brown sugar and hints of pipe tobacco. On the palate there are flavors of rich ripe concentrated fruit, mocha and chocolate cherry with soft velvety tannins that linger on the palate. The wine is very drinkable now and is also worthy of aging.

My #2 wine of the 12 wine blind tasting - very Old World style - balanced, integrated, balanced. I really liked it and found it similar to a wine where the grapes were grown at altitude - lots of minerality and the acidity helped balance the fruitiness. A wine that would pair well with food.

Tasted at the Snooth PTP California Cab blind tasting:
