Benesssere Merlot St. Helena 2005
Sorridente means smile in Italian, and it is our hope that this delicious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Aglianico will make your day a little brighter and cause you to smile. The 2005 Sorridente is a big wine that has great aging potential. The deep purple hue is consistent with the blackberry, plum nose. There are notes of cocoa powder and rose petal and a definitive "Italianesque" bouquet that makes itself more apparent after the wine opens in the glass. It is an excellent pair with substantial dishes such as rack of lamb, veal shank and aged, hard cheeses. Enjoy at joyous occasions both grand and humble. 2005 Came on like a lion and finished up like an elephant! Budbreak occurred early on March 13th. Spring rains continued into June, causing all of us farmers to worry about mildew. A cool summer without Napa Valley's usual "heat spikes" delayed harvest until October. Preceded by a tiny vintage in 2004, we expected a larger crop in 2005, and what a crop it was! Severe cluster thinning was the key to maintain quality in the face of such large quantity, and even so, the yield was greater than in previous years.
Benessere” is the Italian word for well being and prosperity. This is the feeling we try to embody at Benessere Winery. We are a small family owned, high end producer of Italian varietals, located in the north end of Napa Valley on the valley floor where the soil is well suited for growing excellent wine. We have expanded our selection of varietals to include Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah and Muscat di Canelli. We also produce an outstanding blend called Phenomenon.
