Belle Glos Pinot Noir Dairyman Vineyard 2016

Member Review by sld1991:

Perfect pinot for me. Very dark and velvety with a beautiful finish. Bold yet smooth with exquisitely well balanced flavors. Closer to a cabernet than any traditional pinot.

Had this Belle Glos again last night. Jammy on the nose with ripe cherries and smoke throughout. There are some pepper notes as well. The velvety texture and full body complement this fantastic pinot. I was concerned this would not hold up well to the steak and potato dinner we were having, but it did surprisingly well. Interestingly, the food really brought out the smoke and pepper in this pinot - something I am not accustomed to with the varietal. Definitely one of my go to wines for a nice dinner.

Belle Glos is a super premium Pinot Noir produced by none other than the Wagner family, owners of Caymus Vineyards. The striking red wax capsule is a statement to the exceptional character of these wines. The family has sought out prime vineyard property in the best Pinot Noir producing region in California and this one is their latest purchase. Although they've worked with this vineyard, located in the southern alluvial plains of the Russian River, they just purchased it two years ago. 2013 is the third vintage. Once a dairy cow pasture, the vineyard is near the ocean, which results in cooling fog coming through the Petaluma Gap both in the morning and evening, along with afternoon breezes, helping to soften the effects of the warm sun. In 2013 the ideal conditions of the vintage lead to outstanding quality. Only free run juice was fermented and then aged 9 months in French oak. It shows bright cherry, cranberry, brown sugar and spice on the nose. On the palate the bright cherry opens up to a velvety richness and vibrant acidity enlivening the cherry, berry, cola, cranberry and brown spice flavors. The lengthy finish will leave you wanting more. Wine Spectator just scored this 92 points saying "Exhibits a rich array of flavor and personality. Spicy, toasty anise and black licorice notes join cedary oak details, lending this a distinctive edge. Drink now through 2023."

Tasting Notes:The color is a vibrant ruby red. Aromas of ripe cherry, fleshy black plum and dried rose petal are beautifully intermingled with subtle notes of smoke, thyme and anise. The palate opens with a delightful berries and cream character; bright raspberry, cranberry and cherry are nicely balanced by vanilla cream and a rich, rounded mouth-feel. It offers the perfect balance of sweet and savory with fig jam and candied blackberry notes, complemented by cedar, cocoa powder and dark spices. The overall impression is one of balanced structure, bright acidity and silky tannins with a long, lingering finish. - Joseph Wagner, Owner and Winemaker The Vineyard:I have been working with this vineyard since 2003 and have always been impressed by the quality of Pinot Noir the site produces. The vineyard sits in the southern alluvial plains of Russian River Valley near theocean, which results in cooling fog coming through the Petaluma Gap both in the morning and evening, along with afternoon breezes, helping to soften the effects of the warm sun. Once an old dairy farm and pastureland, this site has since realized its true potential as a prime, virgin Pinot Noir vineyard planted in 2000 to a mix of Dijon clones 116, 667 and 777, all grafted on low vigor rootstock, 101-14. Each vine was trained up on a vertical shoot position (VSP) trellis system, while limiting the growth and opening up the typically congested fruit zone with wide position spur pruning and regulating the leaf panel to less than 40 inches. The combination of low vigor rootstock and alluvial soil stress control of the vines, while the cool coastal climate creates a long growing season with small, concentrated, flavorful berries. 2013 Growing Season:It was a long and moderate growing season with no heat spikes or heavy rains, giving us perfect conditions to produce flavorful, well-developed and plentiful fruit. A long, warm summer and cool nights gave us even, loose clusters with small berries, yielding deep, dark color, concentrated flavor and nice structure. The Cellar:We harvested early morning to bring the fruit into the winery while the grapes were still cool so we could de-stem but not crush the berries. Each tank then underwent a cold-soak to soften the skins, allowing for adequate extraction during fermentation, which was up to two weeks in some cases. Then in preparation for inoculation, we lightly warmed the must to our desired temperature and inoculated with a complementary yeast strain. Both punch-down and pump-over techniques were used to achieve our desired extraction level throughout the fermentation process. We only barreled the free-run, discarding the press, in 100% French oak (60% new, 40% seasoned) for nine months. We typically rack the wine twice during the aging process prior to blending and bottling.

Dark in hue, rich and dense, this offers a potent mix of berry pie flavors that are lively, complex and well-oaked. Quite harmonious, with the fruit and creamy wood scents in sync.
