Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves Zinfandel Big River Ranch 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is spicy on the nose with perfumed oak tones and lovely nuanced toasted cumin and coriander accent to the core of dark, oily fruit. In the mouth this is surprisingly supple and slinky, and rich with a core of wild cherry and plummy fruit that remains very tight and almost chewy, dense but not weighty. This gives the impression of being a little sweet, with sweet toasty oak adding to that, though there is great clarity to the muscular, earthy fruit that drives the long finish. 92pts

Oaky and dark on the nose with notes of fudge, dried fruits and mocha all topped with a eucalyptus edge. Rich and mouth-filling, this is a touch soft in the mouth and has many of the same slightly dried fruit- and amber-toned flavors that were apparent with the nose. The fruit on the back end is lean with some sour cherry notes, but is overshadowed by tough oaky and chocolate notes. Well made but not a lot to actually like here. 82pts

Big and very full of fruit. Another fantastic zin from this producer.

Has all the trademark characteristics of a well rounded zin. After breathing for about 25 minutes, we poured this notably dark wine, with a mild nose of raspberry and faint anise. Flavors included strong currant, bright blackberry, mocha, and very faint coffee bean. My only regret is not cellaring this for another couple years at least.

Besides the delicious wine, the tasting room at Bella is in a cave! A must visit if you are in Dry Creek Valley.

This Zin is made from 14 acres of vines planted in 1905. Vine age limits the yields and provides intense, dark and ripe fruit. The Big River Ranch boasts red soils and hot summer days typical of the Alexander Valley, but also benefits from the coastal cooling effect of the nearby Russian River Valley. The result is longer “hang times” for the coveted fruit coming off these ancient vines. A blend of 86% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah, Big River fruit was hand-picked, destemmed and underwent a 16-day fermentation in a submerged-cap tank. Kept on the skins for a full month, the wine was allowed an extended maceration. Aging occurred for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak, with 20% new barrels. Big River Ranch Zin resides comfortably at the bigger and darker end of the zinfandel spectrum. It has a deep crimson color and a bouquet of red berries and briary spice. On the palate, it delivers flavors of ripe raspberries, rhubarb and clove. Tannins are substantial but well integrated, which will allow this wine to improve for years to come.
