My 7th place wines and the group’s tied for 2nd Fresh and spicy on the nose with hints of orange peel and sweet carob but not a lot of fruit and rather simple. Easy drinking in a round, supple style, this is rather full on the palate with plenty of very ripe cherry fruit. There’s nice depth and concentration to the fruit, and some engaging tannin on the finish, but this feels a bit simple and weighty to me. 89pts
Very pretty red/purple color. Very big fruity, spicy nose. Whoa. Ton of fruit on introduction to the mouth--blackberry, maybe some stone fruit. Quite jammy. On the surface more fruit than I would like to see, but it really does not go over the line. I would love to try this one with some cheese. On consideration, I think I will. The 2012 Zinfandel Old Vine Sonoma Valley is composed of 40% Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel and a kitchen sink blend of five other grapes, the most notable being Carignan, Alicante, Petite Sirah and two obscure grapes called Abouriou and Aubun. It sees about 15% new oak, achieved 14.6% alcohol, and, happily, 1,600 cases were produced. It offers notes of spice, bouquet garni, roasted meats and plenty of red as well as blackberry fruit. The wine displays a wild character, but it is a delicious, medium to full-bodied, very good value that should drink well for 4–6 years.
The 2012 Sonoma Valley Old-Vine is nearly 40% Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel, with the remainder coming from Casa Santinamaria Vineyard, Monte Rosso Vineyard, Stellwagen Vineyard, Los Chamizal and Scatena. Best yet, I think the 2012 might be the best version yet of the wine- carrying the hallmark spice and perfume of the Sonoma Valley appellation along with deep fruit and good framing acid structure. All native yeast fermented and raised in 12% new French oak. Back up the proverbial truck! Axe that, back up the literal truck!
Expressive aromas of licorice, dark chocolate and plum lead to youthful, zesty flavors of blueberry, olive and cracked pepper. Finishes with appealingly briary tannins. Drink now through 2019.
Vivid ruby. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of cherry skin, raspberry, licorice and lavender, with a bright mineral topnote. Juicy and incisive, with sappy dark berry and bitter cherry flavors. Supple tannins add grip to the spicy, floral finish.
Truly an old-vine Zin made with grapes harvested from vineyards such as Monte Rosso, Bedrock, Stellwagen, etc. that have been around for a century or more. Full-bodied with expressive flavors of spicy blackberry, loganberry, espresso, and roasted game. A great short-to mid-term cellaring candidate (2–7 years).
