Bedrock Wine Co.:
Bedrock is an itsy-bitsy winery making wine in a converted chicken coop. Fruit from only the most excellent vineyard sites is hand pitch-forked into the destemmer, fermented in open top redwood and stainless vats using only native yeasts, and are manually basket pressed by winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson into the sexiest oak from the coldest French forests.

My 7th place wines and the group’s tied for 2nd Fresh and spicy on the nose with hints of orange peel and sweet carob but not a lot of fruit and rather simple. Easy drinking in a round, supple style, this is rather full on the palate with plenty of very ripe cherry fruit. There’s nice depth and concentration to the fruit, and some engaging tannin on the finish, but this feels a bit simple and weighty to me. 89pts

Dark, earthy and spicy on the nose, with nuanced sweetness from the oak accenting the dark, sweet black cherry and plum character. With time the oak becomes a touch more obvious, yet it remains very well-balanced. A touch heavy on entry, this is a weighty Zin with super acidic support. The flavors are much like the nose, on the darker, sweeter end of the spectrum with some café au lait notes and lovely bramble notes adding freshness, but the depth and richness of fruit shows through here. The finish too shows a rich plummy quality. Powerful yet a bit monolithic, this might improve over the short term, but probably should be consumed by its fifth birthday. 89 points

Fresh berry nose. Easy entry onto the tongue. There is the initial typical blackberry flavor but not the “in your face I’m a big fat Zinfandel” announcement. I’m not sure if this suggests mitigation from other grape varieties or, perhaps, the desired expression of the winemaker. In either case, a pleasant experience. As the wine travels back nice tannin and acid emerge. Some almost bitter woodiness is perceived at the extreme back of the palate. Very lengthy finish that gives a rustic sensation. An amazing wine for the price. Mine was $20.

Very pretty red/purple color. Very big fruity, spicy nose. Whoa. Ton of fruit on introduction to the mouth--blackberry, maybe some stone fruit. Quite jammy. On the surface more fruit than I would like to see, but it really does not go over the line. I would love to try this one with some cheese. On consideration, I think I will. US$20.00 from the winery mailing list.

Expressive aromas of licorice, dark chocolate and plum lead to youthful, zesty flavors of blueberry, olive and cracked pepper. Finishes with appealingly briary tannins. Drink now through 2019.

Truly an old-vine Zin made with grapes harvested from vineyards such as Monte Rosso, Bedrock, Stellwagen, etc. that have been around for a century or more. Full-bodied with expressive flavors of spicy blackberry, loganberry, espresso, and roasted game. A great short-to mid-term cellaring candidate (2–7 years).

Becoming a go-to purchase every year, Bedrock’s Old Vine Zinfandel is not only tasty upon release, but will improve and gain complexity over the next several years.

Vivid ruby. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of cherry skin, raspberry, licorice and lavender, with a bright mineral topnote. Juicy and incisive, with sappy dark berry and bitter cherry flavors. Supple tannins add grip to the spicy, floral finish.

The 2012 Sonoma Valley Old-Vine is nearly 40% Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel, with the remainder coming from Casa Santinamaria Vineyard, Monte Rosso Vineyard, Stellwagen Vineyard, Los Chamizal and Scatena. Best yet, I think the 2012 might be the best version yet of the wine- carrying the hallmark spice and perfume of the Sonoma Valley appellation along with deep fruit and good framing acid structure. All native yeast fermented and raised in 12% new French oak. Back up the proverbial truck! Axe that, back up the literal truck!

The 2012 Zinfandel Old Vine Sonoma Valley is composed of 40% Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel and a kitchen sink blend of five other grapes, the most notable being Carignan, Alicante, Petite Sirah and two obscure grapes called Abouriou and Aubun. It sees about 15% new oak, achieved 14.6% alcohol, and, happily, 1,600 cases were produced. It offers notes of spice, bouquet garni, roasted meats and plenty of red as well as blackberry fruit. The wine displays a wild character, but it is a delicious, medium to full-bodied, very good value that should drink well for 4–6 years.

Bright red cherries, tobacco, licorice, fennel and spices are layered together beautifully in the 2011 Zinfandel Old-Vine. A stunning value, the 2011 stands out for its exceptional balance and polish. This is a decidedly elegant, restrained Zinfandel that nevertheless has serious personality. Within the context of Zinfandel, the style is floral and high-toned throughout. Morgan Peterson crafts the Old-Vine from an assortment of sites in Sonoma, all planted between 1888 and 1935. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2017.
