Bedrock Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard 2012
The 2012 Zinfandel Monte Rosso is fabulous. Dark red and purplish fruit, violets, rose petals, spices and licorice all jump from the glass in a rich, full-bodied Zinfandel endowed with stunning depth and richness. All of the elements are in balance in a wine that captures the essence of this great site. Graphite, iron, smoke and mineral notes provide the backbone for the exuberant fruit. Peterson has recently been joined by Chris Cottrell. As always, the focus at Bedrock is on California's heritage vineyard sites, many of which Peterson has brought back to prominence with the help of a small group of fellow producers, all of whom are focused on saving what are truly natural treasures. At their best, the Bedrock wines are intense and viscerally thrilling to the core, not to mention incredibly fairly priced in today's environment.
Bedrock is an itsy-bitsy winery making wine in a converted chicken coop. Fruit from only the most excellent vineyard sites is hand pitch-forked into the destemmer, fermented in open top redwood and stainless vats using only native yeasts, and are manually basket pressed by winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson into the sexiest oak from the coldest French forests.
A fairly “sharp” nose that makes me think “tart fruit.” Red fruit on entry—plum, cherry. Surprisingly, at least for me, modest tannin. Good acid—as my nose had forecasted. An interesting wine. I want to like it, and, I do, in fact like it. It just does not have that zinfandel rusticity that I enjoy. A Pinot Noir lover’s Zin.

Saturated ruby. Exotic mineral-driven aromas of black and blue fruit liqueur, blood orange and Asian spices, with a sexy floral nuance gaining strength with air. Supple and expansive on the palate, offering sweet blueberry and cherry compote flavors and a touch of bracing acidity. Densely packed, lively and precise, showing outstanding power and cut on the strikingly long finish, which features dusty tannins and a hint of candied violet.
