Bedrock Wine Company Evangelho Vineyard Heritage Contra Costa County 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

From the sandy soils of a Contra Costa vineyard planted in the 1890s, the 2013 Proprietary Red Evangelho Heritage is composed of 60% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane and the rest Mourvèdre, Palomino and Mission. It exhibits dusty, loamy soil undertones intermixed with underbrush, ripe berry fruit, pepper, earth and spicy notes. This interesting, terroir-driven, medium to full-bodied wine shows good fruit as well as a touch of rusticity. Drink it over the next 4-5 years." WA 12/14 "Morgan Twain Peterson continues to produce a fascinating array of wines from old vine sites throughout California. His 2012s demonstrated what a remarkable young talent he is, and the 2013s detailed below continue his Midas touch with a diversity of grapes as well as historical heritage sites.

Bedrock Wine Co.:
Bedrock is an itsy-bitsy winery making wine in a converted chicken coop. Fruit from only the most excellent vineyard sites is hand pitch-forked into the destemmer, fermented in open top redwood and stainless vats using only native yeasts, and are manually basket pressed by winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson into the sexiest oak from the coldest French forests.

The purple color is more red than blue. Pleasant enough fruity nose with, maybe, a hint of anise. Fruitier than I normally like on entry—blueberry, prune—a little too much “sweetness” for me. This is followed by some drying tannin. This wine needs acid to balance the fruitiness. Aftertaste is pleasant and lengthy—which, to me, shows the folly of aftertaste.
