Beckmen Vineyards Grenache Rose 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark and fairly orange toned for a rose. This smells fruity, like jujubes and plums, and candied orange with some strawberry fruity. Broad and soft on entry, this may lack just a hair of brightness but makes up for it with loads of fresh, dry fruit flavors. The acid is certain adequate to keep this lively in the mouth and this does develop some nice complexity with air showing notes of soil, herbs and citrus pith along with strawberries on the backend before finishing with a touch of tannin and a pleasant almost bitter edge that makes me think of Campari, in a good way. There’s a lot here and this could stand up well to assertive pork dishes or simple beef preparations. 89pts

Founded in 1994 by Tom and Steve Beckmen, Beckmen Vineyards is a family-run, estate winery located in Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley. Since its founding, Beckmen Vineyards has emerged as one of North America's premier producers of Rhone varietal wines, while also helping to establish Santa Barbara County as one of California's most highly regarded winegrowing regions. Eager to return to his farming roots, and convinced of the Santa Ynez Valley's vast potential to produce world-class wines, Tom Beckmen began searching for promising vineyard property in the early '90s. He found what he was looking for on a 40-acre parcel of land with an existing small winery. There he established Beckmen Vineyards. Working together, Tom and Steve began revitalizing the site. Convinced that the vineyard had been planted incorrectly, they painstakingly removed the 16 original acres of vines, and replanted the vineyard with carefully selected varietals, clones and rootstocks. Committed to building a world-class estate-vineyard program, the Beckmens also purchased a spectacular, unplanted 365-acre Santa Ynez Valley ranch in 1996. Naming it Purisima Mountain Vineyard, Tom and Steve began a meticulous planting process designed to maintain the natural diversity of the site. With an ideal climate and rare limestone subsoils similar to those found in Cote Rotie and Chateauneuf du Pape, the vineyard has proven perfect for producing a range of stunning Rhone varietals, especially Syrah and Grenache. Under the care and guidance of Tom and Steve, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has earned acclaim as one of California's great Rhone-varietal vineyards. Adding to its reputation as one of the most meticulously cultivated winegrowing sites in all of Santa Barbara County, the vineyard has been farmed 100 percent biodynamically since 2006. Reflecting a passion for quality and a belief in the natural character of the land, the adoption of biodynamic farming practices has only reinforced Steve's vineyard-focused style of winemaking. Believing that the wine in the bottle begins in the soil, Steve and the winemaking team craft wines that capture the unique terroir of Purisima Mountain. Beckmen Vineyards produces a full line of exceptional estate-grown Rhone varietals including Syrah, Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Rose, Marsanne, and the Cuvee Le Bec blend. It also produces small quantities of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Hailed for the excellence of its portfolio, Beckmen Vineyards was named Food & Wine's "Most Promising Winery" in the magazine's 2000 American Wine Awards. Since then, Beckmen Vineyards has lived up to that promise. In 2007, it was selected as one of the "Top 100 Wineries" in the world by Wine & Spirits magazine. Read less

This is bit sweet smelling on the nose with almost a caramel edge to the wild raspberry and earthy red currant fruit with an nice floral underlay. Soft and broad on entry with really detailed herbal elements early on the palate, which are followed by a soft blanket of earthy fruit. This shows a whisper of tannin with good supporting acidity and a late arriving earthiness. Rather gentle and easy going with a nice return of that earthy red fruit, very wild raspberry toned before finishing with a nicely spiced finale. 88pts

Deep cherry and strawberry aroma. Very sweet, strawberry taste. Tannic, but it balances out well when it's at room temperature.

wow - licorice in a glass; lots of fruit upfront and then flattened out.

A rose that leans to the berry side of the spectrum and reminds one of a steely southern rhone berry rose (e.g. Cd Nimes). Nice aromas of slightly dusty strawberry-watermelon. Attacks with firm berry-melon fruit balanced against good dry wet-steel and spice in the mid-palate. Moves into a balanced finish, with a not strong, slightly off "bitter orange" taste lurking in the finish, not sure its cause. As an afterthought, if this is pure Grenache perhaps 15-20% rose of syrah added to the mix might make the wine even better and correct the bitter orange, too.

Beckmen 07 Grenache Rose While most California rosés are produced by bleeding off juice from various red wine fermentations, we craft our 100% Grenache Rosé as part of a dedicated rosé program. This means specific blocks of Grenache at Purisima Mountain Vineyard are set aside for making rosé. We pick the grapes from these blocks earlier at lower sugar and alcohol levels. This helps the fruit to maintain fresh acidity and vibrant red-berry flavors. With beautiful uplifted cherry and watermelon aromas, and lip-smacking elements of strawberry, blood orange and lychee, this wine is a delicious spring and summer sipper.
