What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Winemakers Notes

70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 10% Cinsault and other AOC varieties.
The bunches are picked and sorted by hand. They are then destemmed, slightly crushed and placed in a fermenting vat. These steps, combined with long vatting, gently extract the maximum amount of phenolic constituents – tannins, anthocyans and resveratrol – which give the wine its structure and colour and also have health-promoting properties.
During the 12-15 months the wine spends in barrels and truncated vats, we continue to refine its structure to achieve balance and harmony.

This lush beauty really tames the rugged structure of the vintage, offering gorgeous boysenberry and raspberry confiture layered with mocha, Turkish coffee, licorice and fig paste notes. The long finish has great grip, though it's remarkably well-embedded, allowing the exotic spice notes to linger beautifully. Best from 2010 through 2030. -Wine Spectator

This wine needs a good 4-6 years of cellaring before it struts its stuff given its structure, but the 2006, much in keeping read more...

Rating: 93-96 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 Saturated ruby. Deeply floral nose offers spicy strawberry and raspberry complicated by rose and lavender. Round and creamy in the mouth, displaying wonderfully fresh, sweet red berry flavors and silky tannins. The finish is impressively long and throws off an array of red fruit and exotic spice notes.
