Beaulieu Vineyards "George de Latour" Napa 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"The phenomenal 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is the greatest BV Private Reserve made since the 1970 and 1968. The good news is 11,000 cases were produced. The return of this superb Napa classic is fabulous news, and the brilliance of this wine is evidenced by its opaque purple color and its big, sweet, blackberry, cassis, subtle smoke, graphite, and spicy oak-scented nose. Dense and full-bodied with sweet but substantial tannins, thrilling levels of concentration, texture, and richness, and a heady finish, this wine will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age, and last three decades or more. It’s time to once again fill your cellars with the BV Private Reserve, one of the historic names in California wine folklore. One of the most dramatic revelations in my California North Coast tastings was the resurrection/renaissance of Beaulieu Vineyard, one of the historic names in California winedom. This was the source of some extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons in the fifties, sixties, and early seventies, but the winery fell on hard times and was sold (it is now owned by the gigantic Diageo company). However, they have come back with a vengeance over the last few vintages. Michel Rolland, the brilliant wine consultant, was brought in to help resurrect the Private Reserve program, and it appears his magic has spilled over onto the other wines as well...95" WA 12/09

"Beau lieu" - A Beautiful Story about a Beautiful Place In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. De Latour quickly made a name for himself by importing Phylloxera-resistant rootstock from Europe to the recently-ravaged fledgling California wine industry. He also began selling wine to the Catholic Church, establishing a strong relationship that would allow Beaulieu Vineyard to become the only Napa Valley winery to remain in business during Prohibition. In fact, during Prohibition the winery increased its business. After the repeal in 1933, de Latour began searching for someone who could contribute European winemaking expertise. In 1938, he traveled to France and returned with André Tchelistcheff, famed viticulturist and enologist who instituted the philosophy of continuous innovation in vineyard and winery to which we remain dedicated today. Tchelistcheff introduced cold fermentation for white wines, malolactic fermentation for reds and aging red wines in small, French oak barrels. He also tasted the de Latour family's private wine-what they called "Private Reserve"-from the 1936 vintage. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine was so distinctive that Tchelistcheff insisted it be bottled and sold as the winery's flagship offering. The result was the inaugural release of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley's first "cult" Cabernet. Today we continue to turn to innovative practices to craft wines in our bold, classic style. We have become a leader in clonal research, and our BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently we completed a new state-of-the-art winery within one of our original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet. Pretty good blackberry flavors and some rutherford soil comes through, but unfortunately the oak is way over-done.

Nose of plum skins and some herbal spice. Good structure and flavors of spice, dried currant, blackberry and graphite-tinged tannins. Sweeter fruit tones than expected based on the nose. Nice, bright, pretty fruit. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 10/16/10

93 points-delicious and full bodied, dark red currants, black cherry anise and cocoa fill the palate. Went well with hearty meats and definitely recommended.

Had this wine last night at a steak house in NYC. Very nice blend. Plenty of structure, smooth and strong but not overpowering like some big Napa Cabs.

Tapestry Reserve was created so that Beaulieu Vineyards, with their prime Napa Estate vineyard land could produce a world class Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend. The winemaking team now consists of Jeffrey Stambor with Consulting Enologist Michel Rolland and they have been making amazing strides. From the oustanding 2007 vintage, this Tapestry is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Grapes were hand picked at optimal maturity and crushed into stainless steel fermenting tanks. Fermentation lasted 7-10 days. The wine is aged 20 months in French, American and European oak barrels, 50% new. Wine Spectator scored it 93 points saying "This red shows excellent structure, intensity, depth and concentration, with a mix of spice, dried currant, blackberry, mocha, cedar and licorice. Full-bodied, at points rustic and chewy, yet also elegant and refined, ending with earthy graphite-tinged tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Best from 2011 through 2020."

WA 90pts. - According to Robert Parker: The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford exhibits cedar, coffee and dark berry notes along with a dense ruby/purple color, a nice texture and a style that is somewhat of a throwback to the BV Cabernet Sauvignons made in the sixties and seventies. With pure fruit as well as an endearing texture, this is a beautiful wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. Despite being owned by a huge international corporation, BV appears to be returning to the glorious form it exhibited in the fifties, sixties and early seventies. That was noticeable with several of the wines I reviewed last year.
