Chateau Bel Air (or Belair) is a wine estate in St. Emilion, in Bordeaux, France. It has existed in some (often frought) capacity since the time of the Hundred Years’ War in the mid 18th century. The winery is located located on the southernmost slope of Saint Emilion know as the "Côte," overlooking the Dordogne valley. The land was owned by Jacques Canolle, descendant of 14th century British military commander Robert de Knollys or Knolles, who became Grand Sénéchal de Guyenne. The Canolles were successful in their wine production, however were temporarily forced off the property during the French Revolution. They were able to return around 1802, and the vineyard remained in their control until 1916 when Edouard Dubois-Chalon of the neighboring Ausone estate took ownership. By then the vineyard was ravaged by phylloxera, and it would take his finesse and patience to build it back up. Upon his death in 1975, it was run by his widow Helyett Dubois-Chalon with Pascal Delbeck. He fully inherited the estate in 2003. With various financial woes and the crushing inheritance tax eroding his funds, he ended up selling the estate in 2008 to Christian and Edoaurd Moueix, owners of the prestigious Ch. Petrus. In 2008, they renamed it Ch. Bélair-Monange, the hyphenate named after their grandmother.    The winery has been completely overhauled under the ownership of the Moueix and direction of chief oenologist Eric Murisasco. Yields have been dramatically reduced. The grand vin is now primarily comprised of Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The estate produces no second wine.  Read less
