Beaucastel-Perrin Gigondas 'Clos des Tourelles' 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Napa Cellars Zinfandel opens with notes of strawberry and fresh-baked rhubarb pie. Jammy with toast and spice, the aromas lead to juicy ripe berry flavors with a long fruit finish that is rich with dried cherry, light black pepper and toasty notes. The wine has firm tannins and a smooth medium-body that rounds out the balanced palate.

For some, it conjures up images of five-star resorts and world renowned restaurants, but everyone agrees Napa Valley represents the pinnacle of great wines; one of the world's great wine capitals. Napa Cellars embodies the classic Napa Valley style - ripe, rich, balanced and collectible. Most importantly, the wines of Napa Cellars taste of the depth of this great wine region as much as the grapes themselves. In the valley's warm days and cool nights, our vineyards produce seven primary varieties for which Napa Valley has become famous. Try one of our classic wines, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them. Read less

Sweet and dusty on the nose, this shows aromas of tight red fruits flecked with mineral and allspice notes. On entry the texture is quite silky with black cherry fruit that is threaded with a contrasting medicinal edge. There is lovely purity and aromatic fruit, violet and sweet spice notes that are wrapped up in a restrained, slightly chewy package. The finish is long and pure, exhibiting excellent tension and focus in the mouth and right through the end. A bit reticent today but really very fine. 94pts

Yummy! Smoother, don't get hit with peppery taste. More fruity than spicy.

I only recently got more into drinking and rating wine, and this is the bottle that got me into it. It blew my mind. The deep complex blend of reds was the most amazing wine I have every tasted.

Delicious, complex, deep, and cavernous. Like bunny's favorite hiding places.

Had this on Febriary 18 and had to refuse it, even after decanting. The 2010 vintage is nowhere close to the quality of earlier vintages like '05 and '08. No real mouth feel on the start and absolutely no tannin on the finish. Exceptionally disappointing for what has been a solid zin/cab blend in recent years.

Dark red, almost garnet hue with bright red on the rim. Ripe cherry and cedar on the nose with hints of dried rose petal and sweet oak. Lovely entry that leads into a fat and savory mid palate. Ripe fig and black currant dominate the finish with a breadth of soft, well integrated tannins. - Dave Phinney, Winemaker44% Zinfandel26% Cabernet Sauvignon18% Syrah 9% Petite Sirah 2% Charbono 1% Grenache*these numbers are approximate - Winery

Marc Perrin, of the family that has owned Beaucastel since 1909, says cool nights in August were key to quality in 2010, helping to preserve acidity in the grapes. The blend is a mix of approximately 30 percent Grenache, 30 percent Mourvèdre, 10 percent Syrah and 10 percent Counoise with small amounts of the remaining nine permitted varieties. Grapes are destemmed, flash-heated, then macerated in vats for two weeks. Fermentation takes place in a mix of cement and steel tanks. 7,500 cases made.

The 2009 Saldo bursts with aromas of ripe strawberry and black fruits with well integrated oak. The entry is mouth coating and leads into a mid palate with structure and good acidity. The finish is bright and long with soft tannins and subtle oak sweetness. Drink now and enjoy over the next five years.80% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Syrah, 8% Syrah, 3% Grenache Orin Swift Website

CaliforniaOrin Swift Saldo is another must-try Zin-driven wine gem from a gifted and fast-rising winemaker, Dave Phinney. Through the success of The Prisoner, winemaker Dave Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in the Northern California growing community. In Saldo there are grapes from Sonoma, Napa, Amador, Mendocino, and Contra Costa counties from great vineyards including Aparicio, Duarte, Pato, Eagle Point, Mattern, Taylor, Haywood and Tofanelli. The word "saldo" has many different meanings in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In Spanish, it mainly refers to "balance on hand", and sometimes it can mean "from here and there." This wine represents the best of the best lots from vineyards all across Northern California.Orin Swift Saldo 2010 is 82% Zinfandel blended with 10% Petite Sirah, 6% Mourvedre and 2% Grenache. The wine has a dark ruby color and intense aromas of dark cherry, cocoa powder and baking spice. The entry is rich and full, and leads into a broad mid palate with concentration and density, backed by lively acidity. The texture is soft and the tannins are polished. The finish is long with persistent notes of chocolate, berry and vanilla bean. It was aged in French and American oak, 20% new. Enjoy Orin Swift Saldo with roast pork, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and cheeses.
