Big rich nose yet not overdone with currants, dusty fruit and an obvious oak kiss. The palate is velvety smooth with a semi-sweet mid-palate performance as it shows red and blue fruits with cinnamon gram cracker. Nice, long fruity finish.

This one is a bit more reserved than the bold bruiser that was 2006. However, I think I preferred the 2006 just a bit more. This one's more calm and a tad more refined. Still a magnificent blend form Orin Swift. BV tasting 11/14/09 Lee's Discount Liquor

1. 2007 Orin Swift The Prisoner – Napa Valley (15.2%) – Color: perfect (interpret as you will), Nose: ooo, a bit hot, time to decant….(“Smells like a winner! –Alastor), Taste: Ahh, just dances on the tongue…like Pop Rocks, very strong chocolate notes, cloves, cinnamon, subtle, plums, solid lasting finish that reminds me of home. Lamarr: A, strong A (a very good wine, yet could by a wine of similar stature for much less, low 20s. Interested in the ‘04 through ’06 vintages, as I’m told those blow this out of the water) Hector: A, 94 (It was good, not what I expected, so perhaps I’m a bit disappointed, yet is quite delicious)

Took a while to mellow out in the glass. Once it shed its bottle it revealed a deep, intense, chocolate flavor.

Garnet-red in colour tinged with brick. The nose is complex with many layers including cherry, casis, earth, violets, smoke and coffee. Very well balanced. The palate is luscious with complex fruit echoing the nose. The finish lingers and flavours intensify.

The 2007 blends the lush berry flavors of Zinfandel, the power and concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dark black fruit of Syrah, the intensity and structure of Petite Sirah, the flesh of Charbono, and a hint of Grenache - all combined for a decadent wine with great complexity. 50% Zinfandel 24% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Syrah 9% Petite Sirah 2% Charbono 1% Grenache We continue to receive an overwhelming amount of inquiries about "The Prisoner". Not just the wine, but the image on the label. The image is inspired by an original etching depicting a prisoner in chains Dave Phinney received as a gift from his mother and father (Orin and Swift).

92 points - Wine Spectator "Offers both style and structure, with lively aromas of black raspberry, cracked pepper and mocha, with plush and layered flavors of wild berry, fresh sage and licorice. Ripe tannins sneak in on the finish. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Charbono and Grenache. Drink now through 2014." (06/09) Yet another beautiful vintage of the prisoner from Orin Swift. This is not a wine to put in your cellar. Big, bright and all about immediate drinking. With vineyards sources such as Duarte, Toffanelli and David Fulton, there is no wonder why this wine is so beautiful and powerful. 50% Zinfandel, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono and 1% Grenache.

Starting as the only gringo on the crew at Mondavi, Dave Phinney learned winemaking from the bottom up. This highly aclaimed wine is a blend of Zin, Cab, and 4 other grapes. Deep, rich and flavorful it will change your perceptions of zinfandel.

Winemaker's Notes:

#35 of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2010... "No Hommage a Jacques Perrin was made in 2008, but the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is an utterly perfect wine. Composed of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah, and the rest Counoise and Grenache, this prodigious effort boasts an inky/blue/purple color to the rim in addition to an exceptional bouquet of camphor, roasted meats, blueberries, black cherries, black currants, truffles, beef blood, pepper, and incense. The sumptuous aromatics are followed by a wine of compelling intensity, full-bodied power, perfect balance, laser-like focus, and a finish that lasts more than a minute. The 2007's texture reminds me of the 1998 Jacques Perrin, and the freshness of the fruit and explosive aromatics are to die for. There are only 500 cases of this legend in the making, but for those lucky enough to find any, it will last for 40-60 years. ...100" WA 10/09
