Beast Wildebeest 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

77% Syrah, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc Dark and complex on the nose with earthy scents, hints of old wood, dry herbs, eucalyptus, woodland spice, leather and white pepper over dried berry fruits. It’s intense and complex on the nose. vaguely sweet on entry, this is a big wine, ripe and chewy but well balanced and certainly not over-ripe. Filled with blueberry and wild raspberry fruit, along with hints of astringent plum skin and subtle notes of fennel and mint, it’s complex and nuanced for it’s size. Lots of ripe tannins offer support in the mouth and through the moderately long finish which shows additional complexity through hints of cocoa and well integrated wood spice. 88pts

2000 founding of buty For the first five years the winery was run entirely by Caleb and Nina. From our inaugural vintage forward, we have been very focused on selecting only the best fruit to transform into Buty wine. 2001 first vintage of rediviva of the stones and columbia rediviva In 1998 we fantasized about starting our own dream winery based on the marriage of cabernet sauvignon and syrah—which we manifested as Rediviva of the Stones and Columbia Rediviva. Buty was the first Washington winery to focus on these blends as deluxe wines. 2002 a vintage in south africa Zelma Long connected us with a winery project in South Africa, where we worked with fascination through crush. Winemaking overseas gave us an international perspective on our Washington wines. 2003 THE HOTtest vintage on record We make world-class wines that we enjoy, blending together until we perfect a wine that excites both of our palettes. We look forward to sharing each new vintage with Buty enthusiasts, good friends and family. 2004 our first vintage at phinny hill vineyard In addition to our organic estate, Rockgarden, we develop our wines at our estate grown vineyards. Our wine style begins in the vineyard as we work closely throughout the year with all of our growers. 2005 A VINTAGE OF SUPERLATIVES The seasons hold sway in our lives and in our livelihood and we practice sustainable and organic paths both in the vineyard and the cellar. The atmosphere at Buty is family-oriented, fun and creative 2006 FLUSH WITH DELUXE WINEMAKING EQUIPMENT The BEAST himself ready for harvest with punch-down tool in hand. Our alter-ego BEAST wines are released every Halloween—and sometimes on April Fool’s. 2007 TINY GRAPES AND GREAT EXTRACTION Hand sorted fruit, hand mixed fermentations and free run wines all reflect our old fashioned approach with modern tools. 2008 ROCKGARDEN ESTATE TAKES ROOT Rockgarden was an active dream for years, but it took a long time to buy land with exactly the qualifications we desired. Here, Caleb is pruning the branches and roots of mourvèdre vines before they take root in our stony soil. The Estate Rediviva of the Stones will come from this organic land. Read less
