Basel Cellars Merlot 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 vintage provided us with the perfect growing conditions to make this outstanding bottle of wine - our very first Estate bottling of Merlot. Aged in 100% new French and American oak for 19 months, it is dark red, saturated to the rim and has an exotic spice and cedar nose with hints of vanilla and dark fruits. This wine is massive in structure and the ripe tannins and acids are balanced beautifully by the purity of fruit and extraordinary richness. It should cellar for at least a decade if not more.

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

This is a big, meaty and satisfying Merlot. Have you been dissuaded by "Sideways" and its adherents from enjoying good Merlot? Why should you be, since the movie's protagonist, Miles, with unbounded irony, ends up sipping Cheval Blanc - a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend - at the end of the movie after trashing Merlot earlier in favor of Pinot Noir, a grape with whose peculiarities he plainly identifies on a personal level. Merlots from the Pacific Northwest can be huge, concentrated, highly extracted and ageworthy wines. This is very big but not enormous (think Sean Connery, not Arnold!) or highly tannic; it is deep, rich, balanced, substantial and rewarding, loaded with flavor, including lots of dark fruit and a hint of vanilla. First rate with a filet...
