Darker, more muscular on the nose than the Santo Stefano with dark fruit a bit of tar, some dried strawberry, strawberry seeds and mineral notes with a touch of dried herb. In the mouth this is  juicy and moderately full bodied though remaining elegant with dark berry fruit framed by nice forest floor balsamic notes. There’s a bit of Barolo character here, with super fine tannins lending a mineral edge on the  elegant long if simple finish that is driven by some fine acidity. 91pts

From Rue e Monrobiolo vineyards, fermented in concrete, then 9 months in botte Very pretty floral violet tinged nose that picks up subtle  soil, dark fruit, and quite spicy aromas. This is  soft, rich and easy in the mouth with plenty of mulberry boysenberry fruit that shows great freshness in the mouth.  There are very present yet soft tannins here along with gentle acid support making this easy to drink with  just a touch of richness here. The finish is very fruity, in fact remarkably fruity and this is predictably quite lovely. 89pts

This show off a fine lipstick scented nose, waxy and rosy with a fine grassy notes accenting it’s red fruit. Dusty peppercorn notes appear early on the smooth palate, which is joined by mineral red berry fruit that shows real, cut on the palate. This is perfumed in the mouth with bright acids, succulent red berry fruit, and a hint of spice on the backend. The finish is fairly long with plenty of black spice, tense in a very precise and detailed presentation. 91pts

Lots of grapefruit on the nose here over a core of smoky, tarry, sweet pipe tobacco with nuanced notes of spicy black plum. Thickish in the mouth with plush black plum fruit supported by round, supple tannins and a bit of dark earth. This reveals a bit of black raspberry on the cleansing finish. 88pts

The nose showed crushed blackberry, floral notes, wild herbs and earth with a rustic twist. On the palate, it was medium bodied with plush blackberry fruits and a bit of tart citrus, which coated the senses and lasted through the long finish. The wine's structure could be felt in the close as hints of tannin clung to the palate.

Yes, the Dolcetto grape can be seen as the industrial, workhorse variety, but in the right hands it can be so much more than just a bowl of gobby black fruit (and being from a phenomenal vintage never hurt either). This one is focused and shows floral notes that make it all the more pleasurable. Dolcetto never fails alongside cured meats and cheese.
