Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2004
Winemaker's Notes:
To many Maria-Teresa's Barolo represents the model of great, traditionally-madeBarolo; Compared to the 2003, there's a darker hue and fuller, darker, moresensual expression of mulberry like fruit, pepped up by definite kirschhighlights on the nose. The palate is a staggering display of restraint, tinyred berried fruit, the silkiest of tannic structures, compact yet at the sametime so serene. What a joy to behold.. Best drunk from 2014. (David Berry Green - BBR Buyer)
Editorial Reviews for Bartolo Mascarello Barolo
54 days on the skin Pale and delicate in color, surprisingly so. This is superbly focused on the nose with high toned floral peony and iris notes, gorgeous fruit, precise red currant and small lingonberry aromas framed with something delicately sweet, and bay leaf like. Superbly focused in the mouth, this has fabulous purity and is precise and elegant with this delicate layering of flavors. Fresh red fruit, peach skin, so bright and pure with penetrating aromas on the long finish. The tannins here are so precise, fresh, and ripe, there's great power here but you can taste right through this to the base of soil tones Deceptively small in the mouth, this is packed with such flavor that it is a bit of a shock. Long on the finish with some hint of red plums, this is fabulous. 95pts
Intense raspberry fruit, ripe with woodsy edges and mineral, tea, and tobacco highlights topped with a touch of red rose petals all greet the nose. Wide open, and a bit soft on entry then full of intriguing rosehip and raspberry fruit with a little apple skins note and hints of sandalwood on the palate. The tannins here are pretty ripe, but certainly prominent right through the slightly austere finish which shows some alcohol that is just barely perceptible. This has height and perfume in the mouth that is unusual for the vintage, with a fresh and traditional feel. 93pts
An abundance of liquory red fruit powers the sweet aromatics, which emerge over a base of dusty white earth with hints of dried rose petal, juniper, mint, salami and old barrel. Gorgeous balance and scale in the mouth is supported by super fine tannins and bright acids that lend lovely purity. The red-fruited, lingonberry-rich mid-palate sees a huge follow through to a wonderful rose hip finish. The only rub might be its small scale, but this is so layered and long that it is truly the essence of Barolo. 94pts
Nebbiolo Prima 2011 - Bartolo Mascarello Barolo-La Morra - earthy, herbal, a little pork fat, lightly aromatic, some floral notes, nice raspberry fruit, nice fruit up front then lean and fresh with soft tannin and integrated acids, dry savory core to the mid-palate, nice fruit on the backend with a nice strawberry seed finish, fresh and elegant, 9
2007 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo-La Morra - earthy, herbal, a little pork fat, lightly aromatic, some floral notes, nice raspberry fruit, nice fruit up front then lean and fresh with soft tannin and integrated acids, dry savory core to the mid-palate, nice fruit on the backend with a nice strawberry seed finish, fresh and elegant. 9
Very floral, nuanced roasted chestnut tones, a bit of chamomile and leather, nice fruit, a touch waxy, very cranberry, wild raspberry fresh. A bit soft up front, very ripe tannins up front then finds its focus on the mid-palate with earthy, slight seedy, dried floral tones, some tea notes, lightly liquory raspberry fruit on the backend. Nice finish, lots of savory, leathery notes on finish, a powerful wine. (90-92pts)

Add your reviewTight structured wine. Black fruit, heavy tannins. Would like to try it again but will not buy more
we knew we were drinking this young, so we gave it about 6 hours of decanting, with some sips along the way. Nose of bright berry fruit, nice acidity, tea, spices, plum compote, more strawberries, and red licorice. It became more integrated by the time we were ready to drink it, but it was still very tight, and only starting to show its dimension and class. Needs a lot more time, special juice here.
According to a sommelier at Cru, in a vertical tasting, drinking better than the '97; the '95 is weak
I love it!

2004 is the first normal vintage I can remember in a while," says Maria Theresa Mascarello. "We were finished with our Nebbiolo harvest on the 12th of October." Her pure, finessed 2004 Barolo offers a compelling array of perfumed violets, dark cherries and baking spices with superb clarity and delineation. A weightless, ethereal Barolo, it reveals notable freshness and supple tannins on the long, finessed finish. Although I have tasted this wine many times from cask, I first encountered it from bottle at a blind tasting where it was immediately recognizable for its style, purity and class. This is the best young Barolo I have tasted here in many a year. Fans of traditional Barolo won't want to miss this superb effort. The 2004 Barolo was fermented for 20-30 days in cement. The malos progressed at an unusually slow pace and weren't finished until the following summer. The wine was aged in medium-sized casks. Readers can also look forward to promising wines in 2005, 2006 and 2007. I also had a chance to re-taste the 2003, which is a lovely Barolo for nearer-term consumption." RP

Bartolo Mascarello's wines shine in even the most paltry of years. Here add to the fact that this vintage is brilliant and you'll be moved to tears if you can hang on to this baby for another decade or more.

Gorgeous, exotic nose, with plums, prunes, cedar and mushrooms. Full-bodied and hedonistic, with loads of ripe fruit and spices underneath. Long and velvety. This is magnificent. The maestro of classic Barolos pulls out all the stops. Best after 2008... Wine Spectator. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2000 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 750ml

A wonderfully balanced Barolo that is redolent of earth, truffles, berries and spice. Aged in large old barrels and made in such a traditional style that you should either save this for decades or drink with a good decanting and earth-driven fare.

1999 produced classic wines for ageing that were deceptively restrained apon release. While still a baby this bottling has begun to reveal some of the profound aromatics Bartolo has been able to echieve while in the mouth the wine remains a lighter, femine expression of nebbiolo.

Unusually accessible for such a young wine from this staunch traditionalist. Redolent of tea leaves, plum and star anise.

Bartolo's persistence with the traditional technique of blending wine from different vineyards works exceptionally well in vintages of extremes such as 1997. One of the wines of the vintage this offering is certainly marked by the opulence of the year but retains a vibrancy rarely found in 1997.
