Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

"Medium red. Penetrating, complex nose of raspberry, cherry, tar, dried flowers, marzipan and vanilla. A step up in intensity over the '97...A powerfully structured wine with great aromatic potential, this will require 10 to 15 years of bottle aging. Quintessential old-style Barolo...92+ points." International Wine Cellars 12/00

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello:
Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The 1996 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo was, at first, very expressive on the nose but shut down quickly in the glass. Aromas of tar, roasted nuts, ripe strawberry and roses wafted up from the glass as if to tempt us and then sink our expectations as this wine suddenly turned off. The palate showed a tight structure as rose water and light cherry showed through. The finish was short with dried red fruit and hints of tobacco. This bottle needs more time, but I fear that it may never show the soft, rich, dried fruit of an aged Barolo. (90 points)
