Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 1989

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Oxidized aromas of celery seed and bouillon along with a hint of band aid marred the otherwise attractive aromas of soil, dried leather, black tea and mint. On the palate this was smooth and integrated with an elegant feel and decent length to the black fruit with licorice and herbal accents. It could be dismissed as simply very evolved if one hadn’t had previous experience with the wine. 83pts

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello:
Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Dark carmine red color. Again a reticent nose yet with wonderful notes of pink peppercorn, sweet caraway and green cardamom popping out with impressive intensity. Big and rich and absolutely packed with fruit and tannin. Chewy and very youthful with mouthwatering acidity that is couched in sweet dark cherry fruit. The finish is long, meaty and powerful with lots of dark, slightly roasted fruit tones and rich earthiness. This also wants another 3-5 years to blossom but is a finer wine than the 82 with a riper structure.
