Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 1979

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Corked but this had nice color and weight in the mouth. Good bottles are very nice right now.

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. 've had a handful of bottle from this lot and they have been maddeningly all over the place in terms of quality with a corked bottle showing perhaps the most promise. That being said this performed well. Out of the bottle it offered a smoky nose of tobacco and rosemary with a hint of hot terracotta in the background. It was taut and lean in the mouth with a preponderance of bitter roots on the palate and an hint of fruit on the finish that was edged out by the drying tannins. With time this opened up to reveal just a classic array typical of Bartolo's wines. Floral and rhubarb notes competed with sweet herbs and chinato scents to produce a captivating whole. In the mouth the wine had filled out admirably. A viscous texture with a youthful texture both tannic and bright supported intense black cherry and black cherry pit fruit, a touch of roasting nut meats adding complexity and a bit of bitter cut on the finish adding complexity. this was perhaps a bit clumsy yet it was still lovely and very satisfying.
