Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 1974

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

The high toned nose of this wine reveals subtle layers of cinnamon spice, anise, amarena cherry, smoldering herbs and worn wood. In the mouth this is bright and acid driven with lovely ripe tannins adding a nice burnished feel. The flavors recall the aromatics, and the wine gains a nice supple feel and finishes well though it does remain a bit simple. 89pts

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. Dark and cloudy with some floaters. Lots of boullion and clay on the nose at first though turning nicely floral and perfumed with hints of sweet licorice and a sour fruity adge. Sweet at it's core but not enough to deal with the elevated and obvious acidity. Nicely terthiary in the mouth with a to-p note of porchini over the minty, licorice fruit. Finishes very short. Nice, fully evolved, deink em if you got em.
