Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 1967

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This opened old and fleshy with a hightoned character and more obviously volatile than the preceding wines. There is a robe of decay hear as the aromatics are tending towards the beefy, caramelly end of the spectrum though with coaxing some sagey, green herb notes emerge. In the mouth this offers lovely integration with gentle acidity and a touch of tannin adding some roundness. The fruit is a touch simple yet fresh and red with a spearmint top note and lovely tones of beet root and sassafrass on the medium length finish. At the table this has gained considerable aromatic depth and richness with the touch of volatility adding lift to the very herb rich nose that offers gentle notes of loamy earth with hints of citrus and spice adding complexity. In the mouth this is very detailed with super fine tannins adding to the seamless texture. the acidity is integrated and there is a lovely and gentle bottle sweetness that carries through the midpalate adding to the impression of fruit. This only lacks a bit of length to be truly outstanding but is quite complete.

The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. Leafy on the nose at first, then turning quite floral with rich pollen notes over layers of earth, rust, manganese, and spice. Velvety in the mouth and moderately rich with integrated acidity and lots of soft tannins supporting sweet raspberry and red currant fruit that is laced with stony, mineral tones. Elegant in the mouth with real finesse that draws out the fruit through the long finish, which does show the first signs of a bit of thinning. At peak and most likely declining. 92pts

popped and poured. color was initially pale red, with orange bricking to the rim. darkened considerably as the night went on. Initial mustiness on the nose blew off. Nose was classic barolo- roses, tea, cherries and slightly decaying leaves- waves upon wave. The palate was fantastically alive with a warm velvet texture, pure cherry fruit with considerable elegance and amazing persistence. awesome wine.
