Barrel 27 Syrah 2007

Member Review by knickin:

I loved this wine immediately and I was compelled to buy a case... I think we are down to our last 2 bottles and they just keep getting better and more complex. Each sip has a lingering effect...

Mac got into food and wine during his early twenties via his friends and coworkers at Trader Joe’s in Southern California. He soon began taking trips up to the Central Coast to just to taste, but quickly found himself volunteering his time on his days off to help out at a number of wineries. After learning the process for a few years and spending more and more time on the Central Coast, Mac was ready to start making wine for himself. It was about this time that Mac met another fledgling winemaker, Central Coast native Russell From. Russell got his start in wine while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Agriculture program. Intending to become a farm equipment magnate, Russell began working at wineries mostly because they were hiring, but it wasn’t long before he ‘got the bug’ and began a serious study of winemaking. It wouldn’t be long before he met Mac Myers, and after several discussions, appropriate amounts of wine, and a punch-up or two, Barrel 27 was born to the words “Each bottle of this wine represents a dream realized by two friends”. And so it is. Both Mac and Russell have their own, independent labels as well, Mac’s McPrice Myers Wine Company, and Russell’s Herman Story Wines (named for Russ’s Grandfather). Both wineries are committed to producing Rhone varietal wines, focusing on Syrah, Grenache, Viognier and Roussanne. We work. We work hard to make good wine. You work. You work hard and need good wine. You might have money, but maybe you’re like us. We make Barrel 27 wines for people like us. If you work, and we mean work hard, and you need to drink good wine, and still make your mortgage payments, car payments, kid payments and pet payments, we’re here for you. Our goal is to make wine that works hard at helping hard working America relax for a minute, take a load off, and remove the nose from the grindstone for a while. We hope you enjoy them. Read less

2003 Barrel 27 Syrah - Dark ruby purple in color, with a solid nose of dark berry fruit, road tar, tobacco, and a hint of eucalyptus. It has a velvet texture on the mouth and a crisp finish. How do Myers and Russell do this for under $20 USD? No idea, but this is a little known gem from Paso that some lucky winos discovered on first release. Buy this one buy the case. Cheers

Unlike many Shiraz/Syrahs this Barrel 27 reveals itself with the very first taste. Pungent yet not overpowering flavor with hints of tobacco and spice come through right away. It also has a softer sweet element to balance it out. This tastes like a $100 bottle of red, so for $16.99 you're getting an excellent price. It was highly recommended by my favorite sommelier in Beverly Hills and I haven't bought another Syrah since! I like to pair it with an Explorateur brie, or pasta dishes. Also holds up with a steak!
