What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

After average weather conditions in August, September and October were sunny, dry and warm. As a result, these conditions allowed for a later harvest for the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Franc, and all left bank wines. It is in Médoc and Graves that we find the best 2002 vintages! Intense and brilliant red purple colour, a rich and complex nose, blending ripe fruit (cassis, black cherries) with discreetly toasted spicy notes. An ample and fleshy wine with strong tannins and intense and full aromas. It has long finish with notes of liquorice.

Brick red color, with garnet tinges, shiny and limpid. Aromas of black currant, slightly wooded taste with notes of vanilla. Good attack inmouth, well balanced and neat. Fine tannins at the end.

A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite...This is a medium-weight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/graphite along with black currants, plums, and crushed rocks/m... Robert Parker. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2002 Lafite-Rothschild 3000ml

Rating: 92(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 120, May/June 2005 ($130-$175) Bright, dark ruby-red. Subdued but pure aromas of currant, plum, minerals, graphite, and sexy, coconutty oak; showed a floral note with aeration. Extremely suave, fine-grained and concentrated, with a strong spine of acidity. Finishes firmly tannic, subtle and very long. This should develop slowly.

Rating: 5/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Superb deep purple-black colour, with fine, amazingly seductive nose with violets overlying the blackcurrants, very smooth yet very structured fruit, very long, excellent ripeness and superb vineyard expression. Drink 2010-35. (Tasted en primeur)
