Barone de Cles Teroldego Cardinale 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Big old wood aromas greet the nose which is savory and sweet like mortadella and toasted nuts, with a bit of a sour leather, fish sauce thing going on as well. Very finely focused in the mouth this starts off all mineral and snappy, slowly picking up smoky, stemmy nuance and precise, real savory fruit on the backend with tart plum and baked blackberry notes streaked with minerals driving through the long finish. Obviously a more important wine that the Maso Scari, though i’m not sure that I prefer it. 91pts

The Piana Rotaliana is located in the heart of the charming Trentino landscape, whose mainly feature is the combination of valleys, mountains and plains. Right here we find one of the more ancient Trentino wineries: the Scari winery, already working in the centre of Mezzolombardo from 1759 (an old stave mentions this date). The Scari's family used to make wine from the best grapes ripened in their farms in Piana Rotaliana, above all the Teroldego grapes, which founded in Maso Scari (till 1853 draining basin of river Noce, that till then flew into river Adige by San Michele) the ideal place for their growing. Today the Barons de Cles, descendants of the Scaris by succession in female line, are the brothers Michele, Guido, Leonardo, with their offspring Margherita and Giorgio de Cles, that grow in their vineyards in the Piana Rotaliana besides Teroldego grape also Merlot, Lagrain, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Traminer grapes, all D.O.C. grapes. They produce about 100.000 bottles a year. They harvest grapes in their own familiar farms, located in Mezzolombardo, Mezzocorona and Grumo of San Michele. Read less
