Baron Philippe de Rothschild Red Bordeaux Blend Bordeaux Contrôlée Mouton Cadet 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Mouton Cadet Blanc has a brilliant, vivid color with pale gold highlights. The nose displays a rich palette of aromas, especially citrus and tropical fruit, set off by an elegant touch of green broom. Very smooth, it explodes with ripe fruit flavors on the palate, suggestive of grapefruit, mango and fresh apricot. Charm and roundness enfold the fruit on the rich and highly expressive finish.

Since 1933, Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, located at Pauillac in the Médoc, has been motivated by a constant ambition: to make the world's finest wines, each in its own category, whether the châteaux wines for which it is responsible – the renowned Château Mouton Rothschild, a First Growth, and its distinguished lieutenants, Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac – or branded wines, like the famous Mouton Cadet. Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA has also exported its know-how beyond Bordeaux: to the Pays d'Oc, with a range of varietal wines and, more recently, Domaine de Baron'arques; to California, with Opus One; and to Chile, with Almaviva. One of the key factors behind the company's undisputed success is the art of blending, which it practises with exceptional skill. Was not overly impressed with this one. Very earthy. Leather. Very little fruit at all. Almost nothing on the palate at first until you swallow and then it all comes rushing in. Finish does linger for a bit but it's all earth and leather but with decent tannins. Got this for ten bucks at the local liquor store. I can list a ton of wines for ten dollars that I'd prefer to this one. Try the '09 Augey Bordeaux. Not quite as earthy and with lots more fruit for the same price. May have been better with a big thick steak. Didn't match well with spaghetti. Drinkable, but that's about it.

The fruit and minerality of this wine balance beautifully. I have to say that I enjoy all wine varietals for all of their unique attributes, but to me, the Mouton Cadet Bordeaux Blanc is what a Sauvignon Blanc based blend should taste like. And you can't beat the price point!

Beautiful, light golden color. Very fruity aroma immediately upon opening. Pineapple and honeydew coming across on the nose. Crisp and refreshing, low alcohol (12%). If Italian Pinot Grigio and CA Sauvignon Blanc had a baby, it would taste like this! Great buy - absolutely enjoyed it!

The wine has a clean, brilliant cherry red colour. The nose is very attractive, on morello cherry and ripe berry fruit aromas with a highly elegant floral touch.

Branded Bordeaux has a deservedly spotty reutation, but this year's Mouton Cadet aims to start turning that around. Cherries and chocolate on the nose, followed by smoky, earthy tobacco and black-cherry flavors. A silky texture makes it ready to drink now.

Quite herbal, with some green beans and anise up front. Black fruit takes a back seat but is these if you look for it. Blackberry and beach plums come to mind. The tannins are a bit rustic.

Mouton Cadet is one of the most recognized wines coming out of France. It remains consistently good, both in quality and price, from year to year.

A blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, this is a medium-bodied Bordeaux for everyday drinking. The understated black cherry and cassis fruit does seem a bit lean, but that's the vintage. Tobacco notes mark the finish.
