Baron Philippe de Rothschild Mouton Cadet Rouge Bordeaux 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

APPELLATION: Mouton Cadet Rouge is made from rigorously selected wines and grapes sourced from partner winegrowers in the main appellations of Bordeaux and the Côtes (Blaye, Bourg, Castillon, etc.). Baron Philippe de Rothschild's winemakers monitor the selected parcels, advising the growers on vineyard practices in order to meet the exacting quality standards of Mouton Cadet. TERROIR: Each appellation selected by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild team has a unique terroir, giving it an exceptional range of nuances for making Mouton Cadet. The limestone soils of Entre-Deux-Mers and the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux produce wines of refinement, while the clay soils around Blaye give fuller-bodied wines. The gravelly soils of Côtes de Bourg and the south of Entre-Deux-Mers bring elegance and freshness to the Cabernet grapes. MATURING: A short period spent maturing in vats (10 to 12 months) helps to bring out the bright fruit flavours of Mouton Cadet Rouge. VARIETAL MIX: 81% Merlot 14% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Cabernet Franc ASPECT: Aspect: a glittering garnet red with a purplish tint. NOSE: the nose opens on soft spice aromas with touches of red fruit (redcurrant, raspberry and strawberry) which come to the fore and expand with airing. Notes of aromatic herb (garrigue) also enhance and freshen the bouquet. PALATE: the attack is full and fruity, on red fruit flavours in harmony with the tannins, while the dense, velvety mid-palate expresses all the complexity of Mouton Cadet. The finish lingers in the mouth, its length underpinned by persistent fruit and powerful tannins. Abv: 12.5%

Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA has also exported its know-how beyond Bordeaux: to the Pays d'Oc, with a range of varietal wines and, more recently, Domaine de Baron'arques; to California, with Opus One; and to Chile, with Almaviva. One of the key factors behind the company's undisputed success is the art of blending, which it practises with exceptional skill. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the majority shareholder of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, works closely with the executive directors to maintain, modernise and develop the family business.
