Baron Herzog Zinfandel 2006

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Bright cherry red color. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Moderately tannic. Cinnamon, red berries, brown spice. Big, dusty, and spicy with violet notes on the nose. Elegant lengthy palate with a lingering finish. Quite firm and dry. Well balanced. Drinking well now but this should cellar for a year.

Herzog is a family owned New Zealand winery and restaurant, supported by a unique team of individuals who all share the same values: a passion for wine and food, commitment to excellence and quality, and a love for the great New Zealand environment. As the name suggests, Hans Herzog's roots lie in Switzerland where the family has grown wine since 1630. There Hans and Therese owned the successful 'Taggenberg' vineyard and restaurant in the Zurich wine country. Looking for a new challenge, in the mid 1990's they planted an 11 hectare vineyard bordering the Wairau River here in Marlborough and later moved the winery and Michelin-starred restaurant. Here Hans has adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of varieties, including Arneis, Barbera, Tempranillo and Zweigelt - as well as the more traditional Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The organically-managed vineyard benefits from a warm, dry microclimate and Hans ferments at cool temperatures using wild yeasts, the white wines barrel-fermented in 500 litre oak puncheons, the reds aged for 12-30 months in French oak barriques, creating wines rich in varietal character. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Old vine Kosher zinfandel from Herzog's Watts Vineyard in Lodi, planted in 1935. Ripe, deep color and juicy berry flavors. Rich oak and cassis bouquet from small barrel aging. Pairs well with roasts and tomato-based dishes.

Hearty and chewy, a pleasant Zinfandel, with a wollop of heavily tasted notes and cherry flavors. Drink now.

Fruity and intense in blackberries, black cherries, leather, sweet cocoa and peppery spices, and totally dry, this is a mouth-filling Zin. It's soft and gentle, with a finish that's just slightly sweet.
