What to Expect

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Winemakers Notes

This historic family-owned estate is named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or ‘nebbia’, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region. The grapes are sourced mostly from family-owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba read more...

AWE blind tasting - sweet dried wood tones on the nose, leathery, nice precise fruit, dark fruit, cool in the mouth, good focus, spicy, menthol, floral tones, tight coiled and with good length 86-87

92 Points - Wine Spectator
"Very ripe fruit aromas, with sultanas and prunes. Dried flowers too. Full-bodied, with seamless, yet chewy tannins and a long finish. Lasts a long time, always great. Best after 2012."

This Barolo has always been produced through careful blending of grapes from different vineyards. Pio Cesare stubbornly sticks to this tradition because they believe that the union of grapes from different vineyards makes their Barolo unique. The grapes from Serralunga give a full body the ones from Castiglione Falletto offer an ethereal and tempting nose and those from Monforte provide class and a refined nature. This produces a unique and inimitable wine.
