Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate Elio Grasso Premier 2007
"The estate’s 2007 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate is quite a bit fresher and firmer than the Gavarini. The exuberant personality of the vintage is also a bit more balanced and restrained. This is a beautifully layered, textured Ginestra Casa Mate endowed with endless layers of dark, mineral-infused, balsamic-tinged dark fruit, all of which flow through effortlessly to a long, sumptuous finish that lasts forever. The stunning bouquet, purity of the fruit and overall balance are simply breathtaking. The Ginestra Casa Mate will be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming years and decades. Could it be a modern-day 1990? Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032...96." WA 2/11
Editorial Reviews for Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate Elio Grasso Premier
Lots of fine wild raspberry and strawberry aromas framed with some sweet vanilla and smoky cedary notes and a touch of fennel and rosehips greet the nose. Opulent and lush on the palate, this is packed with rich red fruits framed with a hint of coffee bean and some gentle herbal nuances. The oak is remarkably well integrated on the palate but does become more obvious on the finish with a drying center back of tongue quality to the tannins. Slightly chewy red cherry fruits on the palate, with some light mint and spice notes on the backend that drive the moderately long licorice laced finish that is cut short by the wood tannins, this is awfully good but the load of wood tannins is slightly troubling. 92pts
Four and a half glasses
This bottle was drop dead gorgeous with its first glass (9 am). It was very feminine and pretty with fresh strawberry, sour cherry, roses, cedar and cinnamon stick and little of its structure poking through. The palate was nearly weightless. Then it shut down through the next six hours, where each taste showed a painfully young, structured Nebbiolo. However, at 4 PM, it reemerged as a beautiful bruiser with a ripe dark fruit and spice profile. The nose was marred slightly by the noticeable presence of heat but it was still lovely, and on the palate, it was firing on all cylinders with wonderful focus of red fruit. At every taste, the finish was amazingly long with staying red fruits that seemed to penetrate and saturate the taste buds. However, around 6pm, this bottle started to show a lot of its alcohol on both the nose and palate and I started to pick up on a lot of the Port-like notes that I've read about in other's tasting notes. The fruit turned candied and the mouthfeel showed like a weighty-velvet with glycerol notes. From this performance, it's hard to see where this bottle is going. I've heard good and bad about 2007, and i can image from today's performance, that if this was popped and poured, then my impression would be good and in the 95 point range. However, if given the time to really air out, I would rate it around 88 points. That's a pretty big swing, and so for now, I reserve judgement. Call it a 88 - 95 point wine, or just call me "Neutral".
Classic nose with cherries in alcohol topped by floral, spice and mineral tones with a suggestion of a Tootsie Roll. Silky on entry with pure, bright red fruits and wonderful balance. Exhibits elegance and finesse on the mid-palate with sweet fruit, but no fat, allowing the wine to express with great clarity. Lovely ripe tannins here that lead to an extended finish, which is full of expressive fruit-driven aromatics. 94pts
A deeper, fruity red with great balance.
Delicate aromas, with dark fruits, tobacco and minerals prevalent. A hint of rose petals. Red burgundy-like light, tannic (still), and very long. A dry, fresh, and elegant wine, representing good value for the money. Hard to find sub-par wines at the Grasso family’s estate! http://bit.ly/rLqbAH

Full red. Superripe aromas of red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, menthol and white truffle. Highly aromatic and rather powerful in the mouth, with bright, nuanced flavors of strawberry, brown spices and flowers. Conveys a strong impression of soil tones. The perfumed finish is long and gripping, and gained in complexity with aeration. Classic Barolo: I would never have guessed the vintage. In recent vintages, I have preferred the Vigna Chiniera to this, but not in 2000.
Good full red. Reticent nose offers strawberry, nuts, mocha and brown spices (rdquo;more typical Barolo, rdquo; notes Grasso and less red-fruity at this stage). Fat, sweet and deep; showing more texture than the Gavarini but less open to inspection today. This really explodes on the back half, finishing with superb breadth and length and a perfume of dried flowers. Big, dense tannins and a firm acid spine give this a serious structure.
Full of sweet, ripe plum, cherry, licorice and eucalyptus notes, this is a powerful red. Its tannins are just as gripping, keeping everything in check and ensuring a long life. Fresh, mineral finish. Best from 2014 through 2035.
The 2000 Ginestra Vigna Casa Mategrave; is warmer, sweeter, and dense, floral and chocolatey in aroma and flavor. The perceptible alcohol and tannins on the close indicate a slightly longer life ahead, from 2005ndash;2016.
The 2006 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate is simply marvelous. Sweet, balsamic and layered, this powerful Barolo covers the palate with endless dimensions to its fruit, showing exceptional richness and density. The wine continues to blossom beautifully in the glass with myriad expressions of dark, perfumed fruit that are hard to fully capture with words. This is class personified, but the tannins will require a measure of patience. Still, it is impossible to miss the wine's pedigree and significant potential. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. I was deeply impressed with the Barolos I tasted this year from Elio and Gianluca Grasso. This is an important vintage for the Grasso family, and readers will want to get their hands on these exceptionally pure, beautiful wines before they disappear.

Wonderful aromas of pressed flowers and blackberries with hints of cinnamon. Full-bodied, in a jammy, big, fruity style and a long, caressing finish. Chewy though. This shows splendid structure. As good as the 1997. Best after 2009.
