Barolo Brovia Garblet Sue 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"Bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. A huge finish laced with iron, asphalt and crushed rocks rounds things out in style. This is a super-classic Barolo from Brovia. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040...96" WA 10/12

“In the wonderful hills of Barolo wine, where the landscape begins to take on a different, more animated guise, there is a family that has always been associated with wine: the BROVIAs. The Winery had been set up as far back as 1863 and is settled in Castiglione Falletto. Paying always attention to the importance of the “terroir”, with time and an uncompromising attitude to the selection of the finest vineyards in Langa, the family has been able to acquire great vineyards in the Barolo growing area: Rocche, Villero and Garblèt Sue’ in Castiglione Falletto and Ca’Mia and Brea in Serralunga d’Alba. Thus, the philosophy of the Winery is to propose great personality Barolos (as with the other wines produced), all made in the same way, but with very specific and clean characteristics, always different among them; Barolos that faithfully reflect the richness of our great Langa vineyards. “ Read less

The rather perfumed nose exhibits roses, rose hips, orange pith, raspberries and dusty soil tones. In the mouth, one finds a rich, silky wine based on soft yet firm tannins. Superb layering of savory, soil and firm dark raspberry and cherry fruit flavors lead to a long finish that shows compellingly perfumed fruit. Packed with hints of orange rind, a little licorice and mint on the finish. 93pts

Medium-bodied with voluptuous plum fruit. As is so typical of Barbera, this is dangerously easy-drinking. A bottle for those who crave a red with substance without a highly tannic backbone.

Full deep red. Black raspberry coffee and smoky minerality on the nose. Sweet in the middle but youthfully closed hinting at dark fruits licorice and menthol. Shows a more rustic tannic structure than the Rocche and Villero bottlings today. This youthfully tough Barolo will need at least eight years of cellaring. 91(+?) Stephen Tanzers IWC.
