What to Expect

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Editorial Reviews

Dusty, earthy tones on the nose with a bit of strong rose/ floral potpourri and crushed cherry fruit, emerging balsamic tones, drying asphalt and a hint of burning cherry pie juices 3
Great bright acids with very polished tannins, very fine balance 2+
Great cut in the mouth with a chalky earth tone under dark cherry, leathery fruit with hints of plum skin and melon rind, a bit unevolved but classic 2+
Reveals great purity of fruit on the finish with peach skin tannins, a hint of talc, and gentle balsamic finale 3

This smelled big and muscular right out of the bottle and that translated into a rich and smooth mouthfeel packed with fine-grained tannins and fleshy fruit though there was a sense that there was more extraction of matter than flavor here as the red currant fruit was a touch diffuse and short on the finish. With air this gained excellent focus on the nose with tight, high-pitched notes of rosehips and tobacco, and while the palate remained a touch diffuse the seductive red fruit notes with their tinges of roast chestnut sweetness had a lovely texture. Ripe tannins and enough acidity to keep this read more...

Reviews

Cavallotto has always been a favorite producer, and in past vintages it may be said that the wine was a bit 'old school' but this '04 effort shows polish and elegance. This is a bottle that will turn a small meal or modest gathering into an occasion.

The Bricco Boschis vineyard is in the Barolo commune of Castiglione Falletto. Cavallotto's wines are more traditional than many: He practices long maceration and ages in large Slovenian oak, rather than the small barriques that are increasingly popular in Barolo.

"I cant think of too many estates whose wines have given me as much pleasure in recent years as those of the Cavallotto family. With each passing vintage the wines seem to grow leaps and bounds and the 2004 Barolo Bricco Boschis is no exception. This fresh, perfumed Barolo blossoms with the essence of red raspberries, flowers and spices. Made in a plump, fruit driven style, it possesses superb length and a completely seductive, rapturous personality. Cavallottos Bricco Boschis can be somewhat rustic and chunky, but in 2004 it is a remarkably finessed Barolo. If the bottled wine is anything read more...
