Barolo Bricco Ambrogio Scavino 93ag 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, mocha, licorice and cloves blossom in the 2010 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio. Plump and juicy to the core, the 2010 boasts gorgeous depth and resonance, all backed up by plenty of minerality and acidity. All the elements are beautifully balanced in the glass. I expect the 2010 will drink well with relatively minimum cellaring...93" AG 01/14

Good dark, bright red. Red berries and tobacco on the vinous but reticent nose and palate. Silky and plush, with complex saline quality giving this a savory rather than sweet impression. Not showing quite the lift today of the Carobric but this will need time to express itself. Today the tannins are a bit dusty. This wine comprises a blend of Monvigliero and La Morra fruit. Scavino purchased the latter vines in 2001, noting that the previous owner used too much chemical fertilizer. The wine, he added, has shown considerable improvement in the last three or four years.

Juicy and packed with cherry, black currant, violet, licorice and spice flavors, riding a wave of vibrant acidity. Tannins lend support, allowing this to cruise to a long aftertaste, courtesy of the driving acidity. Best from 2018 through 2032.

The 2010 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio bursts open with an immediate whiff of fresh flowers and crushed roses. Paolo Scavino bought the four-hectare, south-facing vineyard in 2001 the same moment he saw the listing. Crushed mineral tones appear at the back but those delicate fruit and floral tones take center stage. The wine is smooth and silky, although the tannic presence and acidity are very much in play. Drink: 2017–2030.
