Barnwood Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Barbara County 2004

Member Review by Gold Medal Wine Club:

This was a past selection of Gold Medal Wine Club's Gold Series. The 2004 Barnwood, 3200' Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from the winery’s estate vineyard located 3200 feet above sea level. Right out-of-the-shoot, the 2004 Cabernet is compiling a portfolio of awards equal to earlier vintages. This rich, deep garnet colored cabernet was awarded a Gold Medal from the Critics Challenge International Wine Competition. Critic’s judge and San Francisco Chronicle wine writer Linda Murphy comments, “Black is always in style—black cherry, black licorice, tar and peppery spice.” And at the well-respected Beverage Testing Institute this delightful Cabernet walked away with a solid 88-Point rating. Ripe, firm tannins frame the fresh black plum and cassis flavors, giving it an excellent balance and soft-mid palate. Hints of cocoa and vanilla come through on the long, rich finish. Aged for 14 months in French Oak. 100% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Laetitia Vineyard & Winery has a prestigious heritage, rich in French tradition that is still evident in the style and grace of the wines today. In 1982, French viticulturists from the esteemed champagne house, Champagne Deutz searched California for a suitable site to begin growing and producing méthode champenoise sparkling wines in America. They likened the soils and climate of the Arroyo Grande Valley to those found in their native Epernay, France and thus Maison Deutz was born. About 185 acres were planted to pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot blanc and for more than 13 years, Maison Deutz enjoyed an excellent reputation for outstanding méthode champenoise sparkling wines. In 1997, Maison Deutz was purchased by vineyard owner Jean-Claude Tardivat who renamed the winery Laetitia after his daughter. At this time, the winery's focus began to shift from sparkling wine to still wine production of Burgundian-style varietals. Several years of experimentation making estate-grown Pinot Noir revealed that the quality was exceptional, confirming that Laetitia Vineyard is a premier site for this noble varietal. The winery was then acquired by a partnership that included Selim Zilkha. In 2001, Selim obtained sole ownership of Laetitia and assumed leadership of the brand. Selim brings a remarkably successful and varied business background to Laetitia as well as passion and dedication to working with the team to produce truly outstanding wines. It is fitting that in Latin the name ‘Laetitia' means Joy and Happiness. After all, what brings more joy and happiness to life than having family and friends around your table, enjoying time together over a great meal and amazing wines? Laetitia Vineyard & Winery is the parent company of Barnwood and NADIA. Read less

I enjoyed a few glasses of this wine while visiting Provincetown, MA. The mouth-drying tannins of this full bodied, Santa Barbera Cab create wonderful structure. The wine is surprisingly complex given its price point. I found the wine to taste distinctly of leather, with perhaps some oak on the nose. Beneath these primary flavors was mild-mannered plum and fig.

Wine Tasting NotesThis wine has a rich, deep red color with elegant blackberry, licorice and spice nuances on the nose. Ripe, firm tannins frame the fresh black plum and cassis flavors giving it excellent balance and a soft mid-palate mpression. Hints of French oak aging come through on the long, rich finish. This wine has an early approachability as well as wonderful aging potential.
