I tried the Barboursville Vineyards Barbera Reserve 2006 at a wine luncheon at the vineyard on Saturday 6/28/08. This review is from memory, forgive the lack of detail. This was my second-favorite wine of the five we tasted during lunch. I remember the color was a pretty red, not too dark. It looked thinner than it tasted, although it wasn't a heavy red. It was peppery, I'd serve it with red meat. It's only $21.99 at the winery's website.

Barbera is native to Piedmont in the north of Italy. Who would have thought that the state of Virginia could have what it takes to grow this fleshy red grape? Delivers black plum fruit, dark cherries and a touch of mint on the finish.
