Barboursville Pinot Grigio 2013

Member Review by worldsmith:

Everything I want in a Pinot Grigio. Great balanced acidity, citrusy and crisp without becoming too light-bodied.

Defying the unanimous advice of government officials, land owners, and bankers to plant tobacco at Barboursville, Gianni Zonin -- 6th generation heir to a family wine enterprise active since 1821 in the Veneto -- acquired this plantation in 1976 with the seemingly ridiculous expectation of creating a vineyard. Jefferson had attempted this, persistently into the 19th Century at Monticello, always failing to achieve a single harvest. In 2006, on the occasion of celebrating the winery’s 30th anniversary as “setting the standard” for a region now populated by more than 100 vineyards, Gianni and Silvana Zonin opened a new wine museum at Barboursville, looking back upon centuries of Italian viticulture, and a barrel aging room for Octagon, where the history of their creation of the estate that gave birth to a new wine region is laid out upon the walls in illustrated chapters, culminating in the validation of Octagon, itself, as the crowning achievement of Virginia viticulture. i think that if you took a bunch of fig newtons and liquified them, the flavor on this would be similar. This a GOOD thing. I paired this with Gorton's Potato Crunch Fish Filets and it was a great combo. The filets were sinfully delicious as well.

In celebration of Irene gone, power back on and beautiful day opened a delicious bottle of Barboursville Vineyards in Virginia Pinot Grigio. Wine is true Italian style made by their wonderful Italian winemaker Luca Paschina. It's full of apple, pear and a hint of pineapple. Should go perfectly with my linguine alle vongole dinner!

High acidity even for a Pinot Grigio. Robust flavors, but they are lost.

Fresh and fruity, with good acidity. Pineapple, lime, and tropical flavors with a nice "zing' on the palate.

I actually tried the Barboursville Vineyards Pinot Grigio 2007 at a luncheon at the vineyard yesterday, but since that's not listed on this site I'll put the review here. I typically don't have high hopes for American Pinot Grigio, I'll usually only drink this varietal from Italy. But the Barboursville version was pretty good. It had a nice aroma and more body and flavor than other American Pinot Grigios I've tried. It went well with food-- it was paired with a scallop risotto when I tried it. It would also be fine alone, although it's a more serious white than what I generally prefer to drink just sitting around on the patio in the summer.

This Pinot Grigio from Barboursville Winery is romantic and youthful-spirited, made in a true Italian style of winemaking. Extremely flavorful, with apple, pear and a touch of pineapple. Dry and well balanced with a glowing and poignant finish.A vintage to savor with foods illuminating its luscious complexity, this Pinot Grigio is also a beautiful aperitif in all seasons of the year.

A dry and fuller bodied Pinot Grigio from our neighbour down south, Virginia. Barboursville plants a whole lineup of Italian varietals that thrive stateside.
