Quite perfumed on the nose with a touch of sourness accenting the sweetly floral, slightly gamy top note that accents the core of sour black fruit and sweet oak. A bit low key in the mouth but showing admirable richness. There's plenty of acidity here but the tannins seem to have drained some of the fruit from the mid-palate. The tannins turn a bit splintery on the back end while the fruit does begin to reassert itself, showing off fresh plum skin, raspberry and creamy strawberry notes. The finish is short and tight with a flash of black coffee followed by acidity and wood spice. Should improve with age. 87pts

really lovely spicy red cherry, almost a pinot quality to the nose with underlying herbal notes, a bit musky, very clean in the mouth with direct savory and spicy flavors, a fresh and lovely babera with a fair amount of tannins for this variety

I like this. A bit fruitier than the Tre Vigne bottling.

This wine is always a treat and didn’t skip a beat on this night. I find the Vietti Scarrone, V.V. to be one of the few old vine Barberas that I really enjoy. The color was a deep, dark red with a nose of dusty raspberry, earth, undergrowth and just a touch of vanilla. On the palate this wine came across as mouth filling with candied red fruit yet balanced with vibrant acidity and finishing with fresh red cherry and rosemary.

This bottle was almost like a Zinfandel in its spicy and woodsy notes but with the kick of a Barbera that kept your mouth watering. What more could I ask for in a pairing with Risotto. The nose was a candy shop of dark fruit turning to blueberries and with a super long mouth coating finish.

Cracked open this beauty on a mid-summer night. I didn't find the nose to be very appealing but as it aired out in the decanter, it grew to be velvety smooth. Nice buttery finish, not bitter, no aftertaste. I'm no wine connoisseur, but I know what tastes right and what doesn't. For the price and the vintage, this is a can't miss for Average Joe and maybe even those with an exceptional pallette. Cheers!!

Cherries and minerals on the nose. Well balanced, fruity and fresh. A nice wine. A little more complexity and a floral nose would've made it perfect for me.

Der Wein ist hoch konzentriert, von intensiver Fruchtigkeit und mächtiger Fülle am Gaumen. Er zeigt Noten nach schwarzen Kirschen und Brombeeren, ausserdem sind feine Röstaromen zu erkennen.

The saturated purple/black core is more concentrated than most youthful barberas. The nose backs up the color scheme with a concentration of dried cherry, pulverized rock, clay and a hint of cherry twizzler. The palate suggests brandied cherry, dried... Neil Mechanic. Aromas of blackberry and light toasty oak follow through to a full-bodied palate, with lots of fruit and a chocolaty, spicy finish. This is big and juicy. Drink now.

Good full ruby. Sappy aromas and flavors of dark fruits and coffee. Densely packed, suave and fine-grained, with a chocolatey richness and a thick texture leavened by sound acidity. Finishes broad and long, with strong torrefaction flavors. The crop level here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, according to Luca Currando. Scarrone is adjacent to the Rocche vineyard and in fact has nebbiolo planted all around it.

Vietti's Barbera d'Asti La Crena is one of my favorite wines in the lineup and it is once again superb in 2005. The clarity, precision and vibrancy of this wine are all remarkable, as layers of mineral-infused dark fruit flow onto the palate effortlessly. The wine offers awesome persistence and a polished finish that lasts forever. This isn't the biggest or most obvious vintage of La Crena, but it is surely among the most elegant. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

Serious and multifaceted, with peppery black fruit aromas wrapped up in a frame of toasty new oak. Abundant but plush tannins support intense blackberry and roasted nut flavors in the mouth, winding up with a hit of mocha on the long, highly nuanced finish. Not your grandmother's Barbera.

Offers loads of blackberry, laced with vanilla bean. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, a pretty texture and a long, caressing finish. Delivers wonderful fruit and character. Drink now. 2,900 cases made.-From Wine spectator
