Barbera d'Alba Tre Vigne. Vietti 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Nice, light mint and herb tones add some detail to the dusty, lightly smoky huckleberry fruit. Lovely acidity and brightness up front, this is appealing right off the bat. There is a lightness and elegance on the palate, yet this has great depth of flavor. The fruit turns aromatic and bright on the back end, picking up accent notes of tree bark, a hint of wood, some candied anise and Chinese five spice all wrapped around the transparent black raspberry fruit. The finish is a touch short and shows a bit of heat but with good complexity and appealing balance. 88pts

Earthy with light fruit notes. Dark Maroon in color but not overly heavy. Nice to drink and great for the price.

Earthy undertones, light body which doesn't linger in the mouth. Very drinkable but doesn't wow.

The nose showed ripe red berries and slight confectionary notes with spice and sawdust. On the palate, it was dark and spicy with a dollop of fresh acidity and soft textures yielding red and black fruits. The finish was dry, showing medicinal cherry and dark chocolate. It was easy to drink and refreshing.

Description: Ruby purple color with ripe red cherry aromas with hints of mineral and vanilla. A dry, medium bodied red wine with refreshing acidity (making it perfect to pair with food) and soft tannins, the Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne is well balanced with good integration of oak, good complexity and a finish of more red cherries. Winemaking: Grapes from vineyards in Agliano d’Asti, in the La Crena site with part of the oldest vineyards used for our Cru La Crena and other adjacent vineyards. 4.800 plants per hectare with a yield between 40 and 50 hl/ha. Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 96 hours. The must is kept, for 16 days, in stainless steel tanks at 30-32°C (86-89.6°F). with frequent pumping over and “délestage.” Malolactic fermentation in barriques and following contact with the lees for 6 months. Aging: At the end of the malolactic fermentation, the wine is moved into French oak barrels or Slovenian oak casks for 14 months, then into steel tanks 2 months before bottling. The wine is bottled unfiltered to retain complexity. Food Pairings: Antipasti, rich salads, grilled seasoned vegetables, hearty soups, pastas or with breaded veal, pork, chicken with light sauces. - Winery Grapes: 100% Barbera Alcohol: 14,05% Alc. by vol. Total Acidity: 5,43 g/L Total dry extract: 27,80 g/L

This red wine has a great palate with earthiness, tobacco, leather, cherries and currants. A very pretty Barbera in all senses of the word - in texture and fruit.
