Full-bodied and extremely silky; packed with cherry and plum fruit. Fourteen months in French oak barriques contributes exotic spice and espresso notes. This limited production wine shows a complexity that is rarely found in a wine from this region at this price.

The 2006 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigna Franca is a magnificent wine for the money. Dark cherries, freshly cut flowers and minerals are just some of the nuances that emerge from this vibrant, exquisite Montepulciano. Today the tannins remain a bit firm but the wine should develop beautifully in bottle over the coming years. This is a fabulous bottle for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

The 2007 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigna Franca is a rich, seamless wine laced with dark fruit, spices, and flowers, all of which are supported by fine, ripe tannins. Tar, smoke and licorice add complexity on the close, while the oak is nicely integrated. The 2007 is a touch more forward than the 2006 tasted alongside it. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

This Montepulciano is the recipient of the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award mdash; the most coveted accolade in Italy. World-renowned wine critic Robert Parker scored it 91 points, calling it ldquo;a magnificent wine for the money.rdquo; And in Buffalo, New York, this humble wine educator has found it to be simply one of the best bottles of red wine in the store for the price. And itrsquo;s still young! Full-bodied and layered with dark cherry, coffee and spice on the palate, it finishes with some gripping tannins. The tannins soften when paired with beef. Underrated, quality Montepulciano, specifically this wine, provides a complex, aromatic drinking experience. Cabernet lovers will really dig this style. Buy as much as you can afford and drink over the next 5+ years.

This red from the Abruzzo region of Italy is made from 100% Montepulicano grapes. It evokes flavors of minerals and dark cherries.
