Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

Attention all California Merlot drinkers - looking for something new? I've got the perfect wine for you: the 2005 Barahonda Monastrell form Spain! Produced from 100% Monastrell grapes, this luscious red is incredibly smooth, with a tantalizing, velvety mouthfeel and deep, generous body, reminiscent of some of the best Napa Merlots. Juicy blackberry, plum and black cherry in every sip. Open your mind and your heart to Spain, the not-so-secret value region that is taking the market by storm!

Having been there, I know Yecla is a very cool place. And actually, it is a fairly warm and arid place with little rainfall, which is the perfect place to grow the finicky Monastrell grape. Barahonda has an excellent winemaker (Araceli Gonzalez Martinez) and she is able to tame this grape and make a wine that is rich and full of blueberry pie, mocha and espresso flavors.

Medium red. Smoky, meaty aromas of raspberry and wild strawberry, with a mineral accent. Fresh and silky on the palate, with medium weight and sweet red berry flavors. No tannins here, just sweet, supple, delineated red fruit flavors with an intensity rarely found at this price.

The 2005 Barahonda Tinto is almost as good. Produced from 100% Monastrell and raised in stainless steel, this dark ruby-colored wine has an attractive nose of forest floor, mineral, and blueberry. It has a supple palate-feel, sweet fruit, and excellent balance but it is just a bit more compact on the mid-palate and shorter on the finish than the Carro. Nevertheless, it is a superb value.

For $10, the 2004 Monastrell Tinto is amazing. An extraordinary bouquet of raspberries, blueberries, and vanilla jump from the glass of this dense, medium to full-bodied, luscious, fruit-filled, seamlessly constructed effort. It is ideal for consumption over the next several years. the good news is that 2,500 cases are exported to the U.S. This estate is one of the top discoveries of all my tastings.
