The 2006 Banditella Rosso di Montalcino is like a 19 year old farm girl...maturing but not quite at her peak, supple and easy, lacking real complexity but spicy and satisfying nonetheless. One can't help but stare at her beauty, admire her strong alluring legs, and breathe in her aura. I'll be back for more.

Medium-deep red. Highly perfumed aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, rose and lavender. Enters the mouth broad and supple, offering ripe red fruit flavors and hints of tobacco and minerals nicely lifted by sound acids and ultra-smooth tannins. Finishes very long and pure. Another baby Brunello and an absolute standout, lacking only the complexity of the very best Brunellos. In fact, at the moment this is a much more successful wine than the estate's 2004 Brunello. This year Col d'Orcia parted ways with their longtime winemaker Pablo Harri, and consulting winemaker Maurizio Castelli has taken on a more active role. Clean and pleasant, with berries, flowers and a hint of oak. Medium-bodied, with focused fruit and firm texture. Drink now. 2,000 cases made. -JS
