Ballentine Vineyards Zinfandel Napa Valley Estate Grown 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells fairly oaky, but under that vanilla cream is a lovely base of brambly blackberry fruit sprinkled with black pepper. Big and chewy in the mouth, this is a bit tough going but is brimming with earthy, slightly peppery black fruit, nice aromatic wood notes and a fine bitter chocolate edge. The tannins need time to tame, but the acidity is in place to support future development. This is another kind of throwback wine, all 1978ish with muscle-bound intensity and wacky extraction, but it really works with the fruit. The finish shows some lovely blackberry, beef jerky and faint herb notes poking through the oak. Grill up an elk for this bad boy. 90pts

Ballentine Vineyards:
Ballentine Vineyards focuses on red varietals; Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Each vineyard supports our belief that it is vital to grow only those varieties that are best suited to particular aspects of the land; soil, exposure and climate. The grapes used for our wines are all 100% estate grown on 100 acres, from three distinct vineyards in the Napa Valley. Van Ballentine personally manages each vineyard.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

An elegant weapon for a more civilized age. Very little fruit in the aroma. Interesting, complex wood notes, floral and herb qualities. Dry mouth, but non acerbic. Nice textures.

A mostly medium-bodied, balanced and smooth wine with ripe blueberry notes and tiny bit of a spicy finish. Also tasted cherry on this fruit forward wine. Has some oak to it. Definitely dry with older tannins. Enjoyed with pulled beef barbecue.

Deep, spicy cherry imbibes the nostrils, followed by some very supple spiciness on the palate. I am getting a lot of rich blueberry pie with a lot of leg!

Deep plum, blackberry and violet aromas and flavors with some pinecone/cedary spice. Would love this with a winter stew or roast.

Spicy and creamy with a zesty prune and plumb flavors. Round and medium-bodied. A little too sweet on the finish, but extremely enjoyable.

We were very excited when we found this Zinfandel. This winery takes care to find a true expression of the grape variety, using careful practices in both the cellar and the vineyard. Richly textured fruit and good balance abound in this wonderfully priced California Zin. Well done!
