The dark ruby-colored, medium-bodied 2000 Malbec exhibits a great nose of black pepper-laced blackberries. Medium-bodied, it offers a beguiling panoply of red and black fruits as well as touches of mint. Its character, like Balbo's other wines in this report, would be more attractive if it were fleshed out and had a more supple finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2010.

Malbec has been used in French wines for years, usually as part of a blend. More recently, it has gained recognition in Argentina and Chile, as winemakers there bottle it as a single varietal. Susana Balbo strives to create full-bodied wines that are balanced, complex, and simply delicious. This Malbec hits the mark. Itrsquo;s a dark, rich wine with blueberry, anise and mocha flavors and a finish thatrsquo;s luscious and smooth.
This wine was bottled without fining or filtration. The 2005 Brioso is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Merlot aged for 14 months in 100% new French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it has an outstanding aromatic display of pain grille, clove, pencil lead, espresso, blackberry, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied, it has gobs of sweet fruit, notes of licorice and chocolate, ripe tannins, and 5-7 years of aging potential. It should evolve in the manner of a top St.-Julien and provide pleasure through 2030.
