Badia a Coltibuono Sangioveto Toscana IGT 2009

Quite pale and delicate rubino color. This opened with a very earthy, fumy nose that showed some raw wood, sweet vanillin, meat and roast herbs, in the mouth it showed an elegant side if a touch chunky with a adequate structure that turned a bit aggressive in the mouth with a bitter/sweet character that played off the earthy core of fruit, very dry in the mouth with a short, rusty finish featuring astringent sour cherry pit fruit. With dinner this showed a bit better featuring a limestony, salty note on the nose and offering up a round core of fruit that had those aggressive tannins popping out like the points on a sprocket. This has good weight in the mouth with a slight chewiness to the earth, sweet baked fruit notes but screams out for food. 2008-2016

This open slowly revealing a strong mineral tone on opening that recalls smoky gun flint. Adding layered earthy notes with air then dried floral tones, tobacco and cranberry. In the mouth this is soft with wonderful integration tot he almost fully resolved structure. Wiry and austere the acidity keeps this mouth watering and the background notes of baked clay tile show off the growing core of small wild berry fruits, wild cherry and red currant on the mid-palate give way to classic golden raspberry tones on the finish. This is not the most complex wine of the evening but has just brilliant purity and transparency coupled with impressive length. Just an astoundingly good Chianti Classico totally at peak. 91pts

Beautiful brick hues, thin, bouquets of dried cherries, cassis. Acids well rounded, dried red fruits, with minerals of red soil which leaves a lingering finish. Paring with a lamb shank and juniper berries.

I had the opportunity to taste a luxury cuvee of 100% Sangioveto that is aged in one-third new French oak barrels and bottled after one year. This wine is only released in top vintages, thus there is no 1991, 1992, or 1993. There will be a 1994. This... Robert Parker.
