Badenhorst Coastal Region Secateurs Red Blend 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Chenin Blanc is best suited to be the heart of the blend and that is why it forms the biggest portion of the blend. The aromas are very complex and change considerably in the glass. Perfume, spice, tea, stone fruit and citrus blossoms are some of the notes that can be detected. In the mouth the texture and ripeness and gentle tannins result in a wine that has incredible length and complex flavour profile. The wine also has wonderful fruit volume characterized by stone fruit and mineral flavors. The finish is long and has slight phenolic edges supporting the fruit through the entire length of the wine.Small parcels of selected fruit are sourced from various vineyards on our farm Kalmoesfontein, the Swartland area and the greater Paardeberg mountain. All the grapes are cooled overnight and then whole bunch pressed the following day. The free run juice was run off directly into old casks and small concrete tank for a lengthy natural fermentation. The various varietals are blended early during the pressing if they happen to be harvested on the same day otherwise they are blended after 13 months in casks." -Winery

The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain. The property is owned by the dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Their fathers were born there and farmed together in Constantia, during the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes, drank Cinsault and there were a lot less traffic lights and hippies still had a presence. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

A blend of 74% Shiraz 10% Cinsault plus Grenache Carignan and Mourvedre aged for 14 months in old French casks the entry-level 2010 Secateurs Red Blend has ripe raspberry blackberry and wild hedgerow on the nose that is well defined and very natural. The palate is medium-bodied supple on the entry with juicy bright red berries raspberry red currant and has a touch of citrus peel lending freshness and vitality. Drink now-2013.
