B Side Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark and sweet on the nose with plenty of chocolate and toasty oak notes over a base of herb-brushed, lightly roasted blackberry fruit. Light and dry on entry, this is rather poised in the mouth and not at all in the common soft style of Napa Valley today. The flavors are well anchored by good acidity and dry, earthy tannins, showing a suggestion of herb, a touch of tobacco and light cedar accents to the red and black currant fruit. The back end shows a little oak, nothing too obvious, and it drives the moderately long finish, which picks up a touch more herb and fruit character. This is relatively complex and elegant in a masculine way. 88pts

Maybe better than the 2010....But another watered down vintage from 1 of the former best boutique Cabernets in and around Napa. The price is still $10 less than what it was in 2009.....and you can taste it in the wine. Thin....What happened with these guys?

Well blended black fruit cab. A little dry, but nothing that cannot be overcome. Traditional cab depth of flavor and fullness.

Good. But not as good as past years. I noticed that the price on this dropped by $10 a bottle. Larger amounts were created for this years vintage. Decent but not as good as the 2007! Cheers!

This wine is a little too young to be fairly judged, however this is a fantastic Napa Cab at a great price. The bouquet of this wine shows dark cherries and plums, as well as hints of sweet caramel. On the palate this wine is DARK, black currants over dark fruit, these flavors lead into intense, smokey coffee and chocolate in the middle. The finish is extremely intense with heavy mouth-coating tannins that will be with you for the next couple days.

One of the best Napa Cabs in the $30 price range. Great wine!

Don Sebastiani has a Napa Valley pedigree a mile long. But in his long career he has proven that Napa Valley wines, a. don’t have to be expensive and b. don’t have to be predictable. The idea of a “B side” is that it’s not the smash hit that you bought the record for but sometimes it delivers just as much in a less conventional way. This is exactly what B Side Cab is all about. It tells the story of the flip-side of Napa Valley. The eastern side of Napa Valley includes areas such as Pope Valley, Chiles Valley, Wooden Valley. Vines in these areas are grown in thin volcanic soils, which yield small, concentrated fruit. Combine these “off the beaten track” grapes with some from Oak Knoll, Calistoga and Yountville and you can make a killer Cab for a value price that really delivers. This 2012 is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. It was aged in 80% new French oak barrels for 14 months. The wine shows aromas of blackberry, sweet tobacco leaf and notes of caramel. It’s complex and subtle with black currant, black cherry, toasted almond and dark chocolate notes. Supple and balanced it’s a wine that drinks beautifully today and will also reward cellaring. It won Gold Medals in both the San Diego and Riverside International Wine Competitions. A Super value.

This offers everything you want in a Napa Cabernet, and at a decent price. It’s dry, balanced in acidity and tannins, and elegantly constructed, with classic blackberry and cassis liqueur flavors touched by oak. Not an ager, and doesn’t pretend to be; just a nice wine to drink now.

The nose on this Napa Cab is brighter than in previous vintages, with plum, cherry and violets dominating; however, the palate is rich and elegant, with subtle spice and darker fruit flavors. Great with meaty lasagnas or sausage dishes. Food pairing: red meats Flavor type: fruit-forward Body type: full Finish: rich

It is textbook Napa Cab on the palate, with an essence of black currant and dark red raspberry contrasting with firm structure and dusty tannins on the finish.

Winemaker Notes - Dried dark fruit and smoky oak nuances come through on the mid-palate, revealing additional layers of depth. The finish is rich with big, mouth-filling tannins and a firm core of high quality French oak.
